Webcom Radio is Now Playing: The Jeff Healey Band - Hell to Pay

Who Really Are The Bad Guys?

I see we have another onslaught against Alex Salmond for daring to use RTV to air his weekly television show. These critics, of course, fail to mention that none of the UK Broadcasters would entertain Alex Salmond or his show on British television. They fear him, and are totally opposed to giving a Scottish independence leader a platform.

The English Establishment and imperialists in England hate Alex because he refuses to know his place, he refuses to touch his forelock to his English ‘betters.’ They are angry he isn’t a compliant little Jock like David Mundell, Alistair Jack, Douglas Ross, Ian Murray, Ruth Davidson or any one of the other thousands of spineless, chinless wonders Scotland has sent to Westminster since 1707. (with notable exceptions) The problem for the English ruling elite is that Alex doesn’t see himself as inferior to any of these English people in the establishment. Therefore, in their arrogance they view Alex as a ‘chippy Jock’ one that needs brought down, such is their pomposity, arrogance and sense of entitlement. Also, they fear that Scotland, the goose that lays golden eggs for England suddenly finds courage and withdraws from the Union.

One of Scotland’s biggest problems has always been this ‘Scottish cringe.’ It is something Alex does not possess or understand. I am glad to say I am the same. Having worked for 10 years in London I quickly realised why so many Scots hold senior positions down south. We are more than a match for our southern neighbours in any field of commerce, defence, research, medicine law, academia or any other industry/job you care to mention. It is high time Scots got rid of that Scottish cringe and realised we are nobody’s inferior. Like our nation we are the equal of anyone, not superior, but certainly not inferior.

So to Stewart McDonald, John Nicolson, Alyn Smyth, Paul Hutcheon, Alan Cochrane, Tom Gordon or any of the other countless English and Scottish hacks and lobbydossers who love nothing more than attacking Alex Salmond and Russia I say, get educated!

These people love to tell us how bad Putin and his Russian nation is and what a terrible society exists there. They, of course, have the opposite view of the good old US of A. It cannot be because they have looked closely at the facts and everyday lives of American and Russian citizens. Perhaps the old adage, follow the money should be our watchwords with these guys.

Let us though look at some facts on both these nations, beginning with armed conflicts.

USA. Research conducted by the “Jang Group and Geo Television Network” reveals that the United States has been at war for about 225 of the 243 years since its inception in 1776. While the number of US foreign military interventions had stood at 188 till 2017, the world super power was found involved in 117 “partisan electoral interventions” between 1946 and 2000 or around one of every nine ballot exercises held in the world since the Second World War. 117 times they have interfered in other countries democratic elections, which makes their outrage at alleged electoral interference in the 2020 Presidential Election by Russia hilarious. Nobody has seen any proof of this accusation against Russia. National security is the reason we are told. We just have to believe them. I mean they wouldn’t lie to us, would they? They obviously do not believe in the what is good for the goose is good for the gander. 117 times by them but once against them allegedly it is crime of the century! They have been involved in at least 66 direct armed interventions since 1945.

https://www.thenews.com.pk/print/595752-the-us-has-been-at-war-225-out-of-243-years-since-1776

The death toll as a result of American military incursions runs into tens of millions. Numbers killed in all these 188 incursions by US are almost impossible to find. Victor’s write the history! However, in 1995 Vietnam released its official estimate of the number of people killed during the Vietnam War with America. As many as 2,000,000 civilians were killed and some 1,100,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong fighters died. This is just one of the many post WWII conflicts involving USA. 3,1000,000 dead in one conflict involving US.

Russia/Soviet Union. Since 1945 we have had the Soviets attacking Hungary to put down a pro democracy government in 1956.The Hungarian revolutionaries fought until 10 November; 2,500 Hungarians and 700 Red Army soldiers were killed

1968 the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia to put down the Prague Spring.

In this conflict 72 people died in the invasion; another 702 were injured, some seriously.

1969 Some minor border skirmishes with the Chinese along the Sino-Soviet border.(no casualty numbers available)

1979-1989 The Soviet Union in Afghanistan.

In the brutal nine-year conflict, an estimated one million civilians were killed, as well as 90,000 Mujahideen fighters, 18,000 Afghan troops, and 14,500 Soviet soldiers. These numbers come from an American source. We would also add this was the Soviet Union and Mikhail Gorbachev ended the war, not The Russian Federation. The Russian Federation had made no military incursions until Syria in 2015. No overall casualty totals are available.

We are also to believe that the 20 years of US involvement in Afghanistan from 2001 till 2021 resulted in only 176,000 deaths. In Iraq it is estimated over 1 million civilians have died.

The Russian invasion and annexing of Crimean Peninsular has resulted in an estimated 200 deaths. In a plebiscite election after the incursion the Crimean people voted overwhelmingly to be part of the Russian Federation. The official result from the Autonomous Republic of Crimea vote was a 97% vote for integration of the region into the Russian Federation with an 83% voter turnout.

When it comes to military interventions into foreign lands, the outright winner by some distance is the USA by many hundreds of incursions and many millions of deaths, civilian and military.

Without doubt the USA is the most aggressive warlike nation on earth. In comparison Russia is a haven of peace and harmony.

Use of Weapons of Mass Destruction.

That one is easy, atomic weapons have only ever been used twice, both times by USA. In 1945 the USA dropped atomic bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. The two bombings killed between 129,000 and 226,000 people, most of whom were civilians and remain the only use of nuclear weapons in armed conflict. This number does not include the many thousands that died with radiation diseases like leukemia and other cancers over the years following. Nor the generations that followed that have multiple health issues. The US has been very guarded on these statistics getting into the public domain.

Another outright win for USA by 2-0

Homicides.

From 2015 to 2020 there has been 105,120 recorded homicides in USA.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/191134/reported-murder-and-nonnegligent-manslaughter-cases-in-the-us-since-1990/

In Russia in the same timescale. 36,660.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/1045368/homicide-rate-in-russia/

By a massive margin it seems murder is more prevalent in USA.

Reported Rapes.

In USA between 2015 and 2020 there were 807,633 reported cases of rape.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/191137/reported-forcible-rape-cases-in-the-usa-since-1990/

In Russia over the same period, there were 21,400 reported rape cases.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/1033200/russia-number-of-rape-offenses/

USA by a huge margin the statistics suggest that by nearly 40 times more likely to be a victim of rape in the USA.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/1033200/russia-number-of-rape-offenses/

Incarcerated rates.

USA, Since the 1970s, the incarceration rate has steeply increased, leading to 0.7% of the U.S. population or 698 out of 100,000 people being behind bars. A rate that ranks the U.S. and nearly all individual states higher in incarceration than all other countries on the planet.Jun 2, 2021.

https://www.vera.org/publications/people-in-jail-and-prison-in-2020.

Again in similar timescale in Russia. In March 2019 the FSIN has a total prisoner population of 558,778, which included all pretrial detainees. This number makes up 0.4% of the population. This equates to 356.1 people per 100,000 in Russia.

Again USA comes out a winner with almost twice the % of Americans in prison compared to Russia. The US, despite the myths to the contrary, is a much more lawless country than Russian Federation and more likely to send its citizens to prison.

https://www.prisonstudies.org/country/russian-federation

State Executions.

U.S. capital punishment – executions per year 2000-2020. In 2020, 17 death row inmates were executed in the United States. This is a slight decrease from the previous year, when there were 22 executions in the country. Since 2015 there has been 135 State executions in USA.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/629845/number-of-executions-per-year-in-the-us-since-2000/

Russia has had a moratorium on the death penalty since 1997.The last time the death penalty was carried out in Russia was in 1996, more than 20 years ago.

https://www.rbth.com/history/331226-death-penalty-russia

Again another USA ‘win’  showing that again by a huge margin in USA the likelihood of state execution is more likely to American citizens. Meanwhile, in the Russian Federation the death penalty has been ended.

Healthcare.

“In 2018, 8.5 percent of USA citizens did not have health insurance at any point during the year. That amounts to 27.5 million US citizens. The uninsured rate and number of uninsured increased from 2017 (7.9 percent or 25.6 million). Post Covid this number is expected to rise even more.

Furthermore, According to a study published in February 2019, about 530,000 bankruptcies filed annually in the United States are because of debt accrued due to a medical illness.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/nov/14/health-insurance-medical-bankruptcy-debt

https://policyadvice.net/insurance/insights/how-many-uninsured-americans/

Meanwhile, The Russian Federation provides its citizens with compulsory insurance, known as OMC, or universal free healthcare if you prefer. Like UK there is an option for private insurance. Around just 5% of Russians have taken advantage of this service, again similar to UK. There are no bankruptcies as a result of medical expenses in Russian Federation.

University Education.

The average cost of attendance at any 4-year American institution is annually $.25,362. At public 4-year institutions, the average in-state tuition and required fees total $9,308 per year; out-of-state tuition and fees average $26,427. A huge cost to learn.

https://educationdata.org/average-cost-of-college

Meanwhile, in Russia, education is seen as paramount. In fact, the country is home to the world’s most educated population. More than half of all Russians have university degrees.Russian universities also offer a comprehensive range of programs across a breadth and depth of fields. In Russia, the state provides most education services free regulating education through the Ministry of Education and Science.

So in terms of cost in USA, a 4-year university course will cost North of $100,000. In Russia it is free of charge like most countries the cost of education and health comes out of taxes. There is the problem, US citizens hate paying taxes. They view tax as a communist plot not as a Common Weal obligation.

https://www.masterstudies.com/article/7-reasons-to-do-your-masters-degree-in-russia/

Literacy.

Literacy in the United States is 79% according to a 2019 report by the National Center for Educational Statistics. 21% of American adults are illiterate or functionally illiterate. According to the U.S. Department of Education, 54% of adults in the United States have literacy below the 6th-grade level. To put that into context 54% of Americans are only educated to what we call Primary 7 level! It also explains why without foreign educated scientists, NASA and the American military would still be on horseback and never have had a single rocket in the sky.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/michaeltnietzel/2020/09/09/low-literacy-levels-among-us-adults-could-be-costing-the-economy-22-trillion-a-year/

Meanwhile in Russian Federation, in 2018, adult literacy rate for Russian Federation was 99.7 %. Adult literacy rate of Russian Federation increased from 98 % in 1989 to 99.7 % in 2018 growing at an average annual rate of 0.59%.

Youth literacy rate: 99.7 %
Elderly literacy rate: 99.5 %

https://knoema.com/atlas/Russian-Federation/topics/Education/Literacy/Adult-literacy-rate#:~:text=In%202018%2C%20adult%20literacy%20rate,average%20annual%20rate%20of%200.59%25.

So again you are more likely to come through the American education system illiterate, rather than knowledgeable. More than 20% of the entire American population is either illiterate or functionally illiterate.56% is only educated to Primary 7 level. This in the supposed greatest democracy in the world. The land of opportunity and mother of democracy. The nation that views itself as number one in everything and every other nation as backward.More than half their population have not attained 1st year secondary education levels.

What about all this Russia bad, USA, great stuff we hear? The findings and statistics say something different. In the USA you are more likely to be raped, murdered, incarcerated, executed and be without healthcare. You will have been educated to barely literate level.Your child is more likely to die in a foreign war than a Russian child and by some margin!

I have not even mentioned gun ownership. There are fewer than 13 million legal firearms in circulation in Russia, compared with an estimated 300 million in the United States. Goodness knows how many illegal firearms exist in USA.

I have used wherever possible the same sources to compare figures. The apologists and Russian haters will try to rubbish these sources and suggest Russia withholds information. The sources used are in the main US sources.

When you follow American politics and you hear American Congressmen and women and Senators referring to universal healthcare or free education as communism it kind of encapsulates that society.

Therefore, my conclusion is this, whatever Messers MacDonald, Nicholson, Smyth say, it cannot be based on the war like intentions of Russia, their crime rate, their treatment of citizens in the penal system. It cannot be about the high levels of education that Russians receive or the universal healthcare. Maybe it is because Stonewall would not be tolerated with their nonsense in the Russian Federation. Perhaps it is the free jollies to the US and the monies paid to them by American ‘think tanks’ that brings about their constant attacks on anything Russian. If their concern is human rights, I suggest they attack the USA that won’t even provide decent healthcare or education for their citizens.

The numbers do not lie, nations are more at danger of armed conflict from the US than they are from the Russians and by some margin too.

We are not a Russian apologist however I hate the hypocrisy of certain people in the US and UK over Russia, China and their blind eyes over the atrocities committed daily by the US, UK, Israel and Saudi Arabia.

It is time the West stopped portraying Russia as some sort of bogey man and as an excuse to keep the American Military Industrial Complex working at full capacity.

It is also time English Imperialists, House Jocks and SNP carpetbaggers stopped trying to use Russia and Alex Salmond’s programme on Russian TV as some evil weapon against Scotland and its political aspirations. It is nothing but political opportunism and theatre by those who wish to see Scotland remain a colony of Greater England.

It is easy to criticise Russia or China who refuse to bend to the neoliberal, Conservative, USA. It takes courage to speak about the real threats to world peace. These same critics remain silent about American and Saudi aggression in the middle east, namely Yemen and the illegal occupation and daily slaughter in Palestine by the apartheid Israeli state.

However, if the Russians ever do decide to invade Scotland, can I suggest President Putin sends in these soldiers? No weapons will be necessary, and I can assure Russia the Scottish male population will meet the landing craft on the beaches and surrender immediately.

The Facebook Censors

Unfortunately a number of pro Indy Facebook sites have turned out to be merely pro SNP sites and have blocked a number of bloggers, including myself. We have managed to frustrate these efforts to close us down through our readers sharing our articles and building our audience.Sharing in Facebook is very important and helps the Independence message to reach a much wider audience. In addition many have taken out free direct subscriptions. I very much appreciate this support.

  • Very enlightening. I’ve never wanted to visit America because of the gun ownership issue and my perception of the violence in that society. This article clarifies a lot more issues.
The American attitude to universal healthcare is utterly baffling. It seems nothing can be accomplished unless someone is making a substantial profit, even if it creates a stronger, healthier population.
The two party system and lobby groups perpetuate the way society is run. The poor education system may not be a coincidence. If people aren’t educated they may be easier to control and more likely to do what they’re told by those who are educated.
I certainly would not want an Independent Scotland to lean towards USA, but I’m not really keen to be overrun by the Russian State either. Could we not just join EFTA?

    • I spent a year in America. As all my friends were Democrats I didn’t come in contact with the others. But I had a short conversation with a young fellow who was in his 1st year at university. When I told him I was Scottish he asked “Do you have a democracy?”. At the time I was shocked by his ignorance but if he asked me now…….?

      • It may be bad here Jan however in US it really is a kid on democracy. Lobbyists, Wall St and $ run the country. The politicians to a man and woman are nearly all bought. You could count on one hand a few Democrats that are people of integrity. The rest frankly should be in prison or mental facilities. They should be carrying logos on all their clothes like Formula1 cars. Big business buys them like commodities.

  • Brilliant piece of writing – and the Scottish men would would most certainly surrender immediately! Mind you, I could listen to that fantastic music all morning. A cheering start to a damp morning. Thanks, Roddy.

  • Hello Roddy, do you have the respective population percentages for homicides and rapes in Russia as opposed to the U.S.? (Rather than solely the numbers in each nation.) Thank you.

  • Well said, sir. I also am sick to the back teeth of all this scaremongering.
My enemies are in DC, London and Edinburgh. If I was Russian, I might be wary of Putin, but maybe not. Ane I can’t see the Red Army marching down Sachiehall Street.
However, it is worth remembering that Thatcher had her American backers.

  • Excellent analysis Roddy. It reminded me of this, on ‘the modern barbarian’:

“And now I ask: what else has bourgeois Europe done? It has undermined civilizations, destroyed countries, ruined nationalities, extirpated “the root of diversity.” No more dikes, no more bulwarks. The hour of the barbarian is at hand. The modern barbarian. The American hour. Violence, excess, waste, mercantilism, bluff, conformism, stupidity, vulgarity, disorder. Which means that American high finance considers that the time has come to raid every colony in the world. American domination – the only domination from which one never recovers. I mean from which one never recovers unscarred.” (Aime Cesaire, 1955)

  • “It is time the West stopped portraying Russia as some sort of bogey man and as an excuse to keep the American Military Industrial Complex working at full capacity.”

Isn’t this the real reason for the US and the UK to continue to act as if Russia and China are a threat to world peace. US military spending in 2020, according to the Swedish International Peace Research Institute, was $778bn, 39% of the world total, while the Russian figure was a paltry $62bn, about 3%, just above the UK’s $59bn. In fact, US military spending amounts to 65% of Federal discretionary spending and is bigger than the next 10 countries combined. You have to have a significant threat, whether real or made up, to justify that level of spending.

  • I am always irritated by the finger pointing by Westminster and Washington coves – the biggest trouble makers in the world.

Putin BAD , Russia BAD does not persuade me that that is true – quite the reverse in fact. “Reds under the Bed ” has caused far more trouble than it’s worth.
Total ignorance of another’s valued culture and arrogant assumptions of supremacy have damaged those who claim to be the ‘good guys’ but neither the UK nor USA seem to have mirrors in which they can review their actions nor indeed do they appear to wish to view their reflection.

  • Well said Roddy. My wife is Russian, and she is sick to the back teeth with the continual slurs, lies and general bollocks spoken about Russia and her people. I spent a few months there right at the end of the communist period, and apart from the shortages – a la brexit – was happy enough with the usual issues of civic life and have many fond memories.

It is very plain to me that the bad guys here are America (though it seems to me that the root cause of the American problem is England; another story) and living in the free world it’s plain to me that America is not free – that it, unless you are part of the pirate gang running the country and dominating the world. I say ‘pirate’, as their basic philosophpy is to loot, pillage and expropriate any and all resources of value they come across, and destroy or kill anyone in the way.

To conflate two of Johnson’s statements: “F*ck business. We are a buccaneering nation”. Buccaneers are pirates, enriching themselves with the blood and treasure of others. This “pirate gang” (I hesitate to say ‘pirate class’) may be strongest and most dominant in America, but has branches all over.

Russia has a long history, and I suspect will still have a history when America is just a forgotten nightmare.

  • A bit chauvinistic Roddy. I think you spoilt a good article by the “surrender” comment.
    Think about it!

  • Yes, indeed. If you turn the propaganda on its head, you will very likely be a lot nearer the truth. No doubt, life in Russia is not a picnic, but it isn’t here either except for the haves. We get told about Russian mafia controlling everything. And here? It just isn’t called the mafia. There are a lot of good things about the West, too, though, but, bit by bit, we are losing those worthwhile aspects of Western democracy, as more and more, we are subjected to an onslaught of mendacity and, frankly, madness, on a scale never seen before.

Listen to level-headed Americans and they will tell you that, although their country is going to hell in a handcart, the Brits have decided to replace the handcart with a racing car. They will also tell you that, while Britain takes most of the bad stuff from America (and also a lot of the good stuff, too, it must be said) it actually manages to deform the bad stuff to make it even badder on this side of the pond, and they reckon that’s some feat.

I see that there is yet another letter in The National today decrying Alec Salmond and mentioning – naturally, neither the Unionists nor their SNP compadres can resist another slur at the only person in Scottish politics in recent years who ever actually achieved anything in the way of independence.

That he did not succeed was not his fault: it was the fault of the franchise and the spineless Scots who would rather exist on bended knee with lowered brow than do anything that might cause them a bit of discomfort, while the majority languish in either poverty or something very close to it. I have always been very opposed to pre independence referendums, but, I did think that Mr Salmond did extremely well in wresting an agreement from Westminster, which, had we won, would have had to be honoured. That we did not win id down to us, nobody else. Delusion appears to be the name of the game in politics these days, and the SNP adherents are as delusional as the trans warriors.

This is the age of the minority: in the case of independence, an amalgam of minorities, none of which, alone, could make a dent in Scotland’s polls; in the case of the trans lobby, half the population must give up their human rights to yet another colonial interest.

  • It amazes me that the spent uranium tipped shells are not classified as nuclear weapons, these have been used extensively by most of the American and UK forces in the east, causing terrible damage to the populations over there and is continuing to do so.
We don’t need to worry about global warming the radiation waste from all over is killing quietly without anyone admitting to it.

  • The facts speak much more clearly than perceptions and opinions. The US is indeed a rogue nation dressed up as a free market, liberal and welcoming country.

Regards the Scottish Cringe! We only have to look at Ruth Davidson’s conference speech at Tory HQ a few years ago. The one where she talks about Scots stealing stuff. The stuff that goes down a treat with the masters. Denigrating your nation with false stereotypes. Or how many times when Scots coming back from holiday do we hear ‘coming back to the UK’ because we can’t possibly be a legitimate stand alone country. Where a staycation includes going to England , when we actually live in a country called Scotland , so it’s not a staycation. Football commentators in Scotland talking about a ‘British Style Game’. When another European team comes to play in Scotland. There is in fact no British football and English and Scottish football are not the same. The list goes on….

  • In the same way that the British Empire was neutered thus will the world’s self appointed gun-totting marshal and violently unpredictable drunk be neutered, accompanied by its equally vicious attack dogs. That the knives are already being sharpened for the task, shouldn’t be doubted.

  • The Nationla’s edito was just so blatantly biaised. AS and RT, than next to it Russia might have been involved in the Indy Ref, the all article using might haves and maybes. That is proper uk journalism…

  • Who are the bad guys..? well perhaps it’s the corporate elite, world wide, all connected, your turn to play the bad guy, war=profit, here we go again, keep the eejits in a state of fear and rob them blind.

Also remember Libya and that bad man Gadaffi, they treated their people amazingly well, closest to a real utopian fair society and now it’s a wasteland thanks to the “land of the free”. Refute the petro dollar at your very great peril, and never ever let Blair into your tent.

Meanwhile in Scotland, we are being hog-tied and prepared for the roast…Aye, so they think.

Time for some revolting peasants and a razor sharp guillotine methinks..

  • Today’s America is even more revealing. Trump has done his master’s bidding already, dividing the country into two parts. He says Putin is a genius, and Biden is weak – talk about stab in the back. The damage is done, Putin is free to pursue his designated role as the bad guy, or the good guy, who knows, but irrespective of that, who will pay. The collateral damage and mass movement of refugees, the rest of us with inflated energy prices, and who will profit and get off scot (sic) free. Johnson, Trump and all the other bad actors. Corporate dems like Biden will be the fall guys, and on and on the Military Industrial Complex will roll, over anything in its way. US is headed for authoritarianism just like Russia has, and that plan is well on in its implementation. The problem for us is that we are headed down the same road here, and fast. The attacks on our democracy and freedoms are widespread and in a pincer movement.

  • Thank you so much for your balanced article. Got really fed up the other day after hearing of Doris’s speech on ‘sovereignty’, etc and while of course Scotland is an example to show what hypocrites the establishment are, thought about those poor souls from the Ghagos islands that Britain and America stole from them and won’t let the islanders back!!!

  • Brilliant article Roddy. Keep it up, most people know who the bad guys are, and it isn’t the Russians.
I’ve surrendered already to that group of Russians.
