AS UK GOVERNMENT ADMITS 124 BILLION KILLOWATT HOURS OF ENERGY WORTH OVER £2 TRILLION BY 2030 TO BE SENT SOUTH
ALBA Depute Leader Kenny MacAskill MP has called for a Scottish public energy company to be established as he publishes a new paper – 124 Billion Reasons for Independence, which shows that by 2030 Scotland will be sending south 124 billion kilowatt hours of energy which will be worth over £2 trillion at today’s prices.
The key findings are:
- 35 TWh of energy were transferred from Scotland to England in 2021.The UK Government estimates the price of 35 TWH to be £600 billion.
- The amount of energy taken south is estimated by the UK Government to rise to 124 TWh in 2030. At today’s prices, that amount of energy is worth an estimated £2.12 Trillion.
- Based on the energy consumption of an average 2-3 bedroom household this was enough in 2021 to power Scotland’s 2.5 million homes 3 and a half times over.
- By 2030 this would be enough to power Scotland’s 2.5 million homes more than 12 times over.
- Scotland produces more energy than it requires, and indeed more than the national grid can currently cope with.
- Additional steps are being taken to transfer this huge surplus of resources south with cables to England being laid from Peterhead and Torness to Drax and Redcar to transfer renewable energy from Scotland.
In a statement Kenny MacAskill MP said:
“This paper not only shows Scotland to be self sufficient in electricity production from renewable energy resources but that our vast renewable energy reserves far exceed our own energy needs – enough to power Scotland’s 2.5 millions homes more than 12 times over by 2030!
“Scotland’s domestic energy needs are already largely met from renewable energy, 100% in the north of Scotland and as of 2020, 97% of Scotland’s electricity demand in the country as a whole.
“We are witnessing a massive transfer of renewable energy resources, from offshore wind, from Scotland to England, without any economic revenues, major manufacturing or supply chain jobs coming to Scotland.
“Scots are being ‘ripped off’ in what has become the ‘Great Scottish renewable energy swindle’. Scotland’s massive wind energy resource is being cabled south, from under our noses. Meanwhile the companies rake in the profits and our people are forced to pay sky high energy bills or to go cold.
“That is why I am calling for the establishment of a Scottish public energy company, with the power to take a stake in every offshore wind farm, to end the ‘Great Scottish renewable energy swindle’ and bring affordable energy to people and business.
“This massive renewable energy windfall should be powering Scottish homes and businesses while at the same time putting Scotland in a prime position to amass additional revenues by exporting excess energy south. However the reality is that Scotland’s massive energy bounty is being exploited while Scots families are seeing their fuel bills go through the roof.
“Why is it when Scotland is self sufficient in electricity and is transferring massive amounts of energy to power homes and businesses in England our people are still living in fuel poverty?
“This is a national scandal. Scotland receives no direct benefit from this transfer in terms of economic revenues or jobs. This is the ‘Great Scottish renewable energy swindle’ and because this equates to 124 billion kilowatt hours of energy in 2030, it represents 124 billion reasons why Scotland needs control of its own energy resources through Independence.”
Webcom Radio is Now Playing:
I thank Kenny for his continued exposure of this theft and his statements reinforcing the extreme detrimental effects that the theft is having on Scots in the face of ever increasing poverty and the inability to face down those challenges
It is one thing however to expose this egregious continued economic onslaught against the Scottish people but the only way to STOP it is by independence and currently the snp are doing their best to ensure that doesn’t happen
The ALBA party have to get the gloves off and expose publicly the gross incompetence and failed governance of sturgeon and her green accomplices , they have to ignore the barbs and insults from the brain dead sycophants still supporting the deviants and perverts , as we have witnessed the snp membership has collapsed and a rump collective of between 50,000 to 70,000 are now holding the rest of the electorate to ransom , ALBA has to produce flyers and educational material EXPOSING the incompetence of the snp’s governance whilst contrasting how ALBA would have managed the running of the country competently and effectively
The perfect example is the energy situation that Kenny is exposing BUT he has to go further , he has to provide examples of the total failure of sturgeon in the energy battle , how she PROMISED Scotland a national energy not for profit company then without reason or explanation DUMPED the idea , a DUMPING that coincided with the biggest rise in energy costs in decades which has resulted in DEVASTATING heating costs for Scots in the coldest part of britain , a DUMPING that has caused families with children, and pensioners forced to CHOOSE between heating or eating
Kenny exposes the rank corruption and theft of Scotland’s resources but again he has to go further , he has to produce the educational evidence of this theft and how ALBA will STOP it , as it is not just the WM establishment that is doing the STEALING but also the major energy companies, he has to explain what ALBA will do to FORCE these energy companies to take a smaller bite of the cake , he maintains WE will take a stake in the energy supply , how big a stake , how will it be managed
He has to expose again publicly the sturgeon GIVEAWAY of our seabed for peanuts and how that abomination will be rectified
For 9 years sturgeon and her morons only ever encouraged people to go out and CONVERT undecided and no voters to get independence BUT never once produced ANY educational or factual material or documentation to help with that conversion , many ordinary voters like Zarkwan and others did their best but it was not official evidence and was not accepted as such ,ALBA with the help of others has to produce that EVIDENCE
Twathater has said it all! Thanks to you and, of course, Kenny.
Bang on the button, Kenny/BB/twathater. This is a crime, or should be. Imagine being able to legitimately sell that surplus where and to whom we wished?
The majority of the Scottish public will only tak tent of this crime against Scotland if it’s given the correct, justified media coverage. But we all know how anti Scottish the media is. We can’t rely on the weak, gutless SNP to force this issue onto and through the media. Kenny and Neale do their best in the Westminster cesspit and have in the past created some disruption therein to put forward the case for independence but I think they need to do so again and again – easy for me to say of course since they risk being banned for long periods. But something radical must be done. Why continue to play by Westminster rules when all these rules are deliberately stacked against Scotland? Again, an easy question for someone like me to ask.
Will next month’s conference spend time examining the ways we can all expose the crimes against Scotland and the way we can all influence the media in such a way as it cannot ignore us and cannot deny these crimes?
I know I bore some people with my continued cries for radical leadership on independence but it’s what I genuinely believe is needed more than ever before.
There is a cracking agenda for Conference. Front and Centre is the Independence deate.Hopefully many of your questions will be answered. You could speak too and ask them from the rostrum to answer.
Are you sure these numbers are correct? £600 billion is over three times Scotland’s entire GDP.
This will have been well researched abd checked before Kenny would release such a statement. In essence to your question I believe it to be factual. However, if you can find different numbers I will post and tell Kenny.
Scotland’s exports of electricity were 16 terawatt hours in 2021 and 18.7 terawatt hours in 2022 according to the Scottish Government, not the 35 terawatt figure in Kenny’s article. According to the Scottish Government, that was worth £4 billion in 2022 and less than that in 2021, not the £600 billion 2021 figure in Kenny’s article.
https://www.gov.scot/publications/energy-statistics-for-scotland-q4-2022/pages/electricity-exports/#:~:text=Scotland's%20net%20exports%20of%20electricity,a%2063%25%20increase%20on%202021.
Kenny’s article says ……by 2030 so cumulative.
If so, cumulative since when? It doesn’t look like it goes back much further than 2020. Why stop there? Why not go back to the start of devolution in 1999?
This doesn’t however answer the huge disparity between the costs per terawatt hour. According to the Scottish Government, 17.8 terawatt hours is worth £4 billion which works out at less than £250 million per terawatt hour. According to Kenny’s article, 35 terawatt hours is worth £600 billion which works out at over £17 billion per terawatt hour (over 70 times greater).
Kenny’s numbers need to be checked as I think they are in error. If they are correct, it would mean that Scotland’s GDP must be several times greater than official figures indicate and that would be an even bigger story…
If the terawatt hours figure is cumulative, it must only go back to 2020. Fair enough, but this should have been made clear in the article. Also, I’d have gone further back to show how this had varied over time, perhaps to 1999 if data is available, to illustrate long term trends.
A much bigger issue however is the massive disparity between the costs per terawatt hour. The Scottish Government’s figures are based on circa £225 million per terawatt hour for 2022 which equates to a believable £0.225 per kWh. Kenny’s figures are based on over £17 billion per terawatt hour which equates to £17 per kWh which is demonstrably wrong when compared to current domestic tariffs in Scotland of about £0.34 per kWh.
As I said in my original comment, Kenny’s figures need to be rechecked. There’s no way that Scotland’s exports of electricity for 2020 and 2021 amounted to more than three times Scotland’s entire annual GDP.
Or else you didn’t realise the extent of the theft by our English neighbours aided and abetted of course, by the House Jocks.
I wish, but the figures are demonstrably wrong.
The value of 124 billion kwh @ £0.34 per kwh (current price cap level) would be approx £42 billion per annum. This suggests the value of Scotland’s renewable energy exports could soon exceed oil (the latter is est at 1 million bpd @ $80 pb = approx $29.2 billion/yr). Gas, mostly from Scotland, still maintains around 35% of UK power generation, so that must be a good few £billion too.
Total value of oil, gas and renewable energy combined could therefore soon be as much as £100 billion per annum, which is almost twice the current Holyrood budget.
In addition, I hear that whisky may actually be worth closer to £25 billion, not the £5 billion we are told its worth.
Economic plunder is clearly the main objective of colonialism (Albert Memmi).
In the light of Scotland’s huge renewable power bounty, together with Scotland’s oil, gas and hydro bounties, here’s a thought for the day.
COMMENTARY from BOE chief economist
” British households and businesses “need to accept” they are poorer and stop seeking pay increases and pushing prices higher, the Bank of England’s chief economist, Huw Pill, has said.
Pill said a game of “pass the parcel” is taking place in the economy – as households and companies try to pass on their higher costs.
Speaking on a podcast produced by Columbia law school, Pill said it’s natural for a household to seek higher wages in response to soaring energy bills, or for a restaurant to increase its prices.
However, he said the UK is a big importer of natural gas, and its price has gone up a lot compared with the exports, mainly services, which the UK sells to the rest of the world.”
