Anyone that follows my blogs or listens to my podcasts knows that I do not view an independence referendum as our best option for regaining our independence. However, as of today it appears to be the only option available to us. Much as many of us do not like it, the SNP is totally in charge of Scotland’s fate. There is much to dislike in the present leadership of the SNP. Foremost in that is the inability of that leadership to listen to or take any cognisance of the wishes of its own membership never mind the wider movement.
The constant attacks and sniping from some of their elected representatives to other independence parties and members is to say the least, regrettable. The refusal to seriously debate the genuine concerns of adult human females to the proposed GRA Reforms is an utter disgrace. To cast aside women’s genuine fears over self-identification as ‘not valid’ verges on criminal.

That for 8 years neither the SNP Conference nor the NEC ruling body has debated independence is incredible by anyone’s standards. This is supposed to be the vehicle to restore Scotland’s sovereignty yet in all this time their membership has not been permitted to debate the topic at their annual conferences. Worse still, devoted SNP members that tried to introduce this debate on the floor of the conference were booed off the stage by Sturgeon’s child supporters.

Is it any wonder that Chris left the SNP after being treated so disgustingly and worst of all because he dared to suggest another option to regain our independence? Since Chris’s departure from the SNP, Angus Brendan MacNeil, MP, has tried several times to have that debate on a Plan B at SNP Conference. He has been stonewalled on each and every occasion.
Therefore, we have to conclude that Ms Sturgeon is determined to have only one option, that of a Section 30 Referendum. She has also repeatedly insisted this must be a ‘legal’ referendum.Many like myself have tried in vain to get the definition of what is meant by a legal referendum. Nobody has ever answered that. All referendums in the UK are purely advisory, including the Brexit Referendum. In the history of the UK’ all 100+ years, every elected government has accepted referendum results all bar one had no Section 30 or anything like it. We certainly did not need the approval of Brussels or the European Parliament for the UK to secede from the European Union. A straightforward advisory referendum sufficed.
A Section 30 merely confirms that both the governments in London and Edinburgh would accept the outcome of the vote. I am not aware of a Section 30 order making an advisory referendum something other than an advisory referendum?
Particularly in English Law, precedent is a powerful factor. However, let me stress I am not even a barrack room lawyer merely an observer of events! Should any Constitutional lawyers be slumming it here in my blog, please feel free to enlighten us all.
I, like the rest of Scotland need to accept the leader of the SNP at her word, and these are her words.
She said planning for an independence referendum was one of the things which had been put aside to focus on the Covid pandemic.
“But I won an election on the basis of offering people a choice – and it is a choice,” she said.

Let us take the First Minister at her word and examine what needs to happen if we are to win this upcoming referendum in 2023. We need to put certain things in place immediately. Nicola Sturgeon needs to reunite the fractured YES Movement and restore it to the united campaigning monolith it was when she inherited the Independence leadership back in November 2014. The broadest political church in the history of British politics, not just Scottish politics!
She needs to put behind herself and her party everything that has divided us to date. She has to offer the hand of unity and comradeship to Alba, ISP and people of no party allegiance. She has to demand that her supporters desist from the jibes and attacks on fellow independence supporters. She has to express a new beginning for our movement. Without that basic unity we cannot possibly win a referendum. If she is not prepared to do that one task than everything else is just a waste of time. Stop all talk of a referendum now or we will lose!
The recent council elections should be a salutary lesson to her. While she was trying to woo Anas Sarwar and the Labour Party and at the same time telling her supporters SNP 1 2 and no other party. The Unionists were scheming to take control of the majority of Scotland’s Councils. The Unionists used the STV voting system and outcome to their advantage just as they had done for the Holyrood Elections in 2021. Both times Sturgeon’s obsession with trying to destroy the Alba Party hurt Scotland and its cause, the only other thing it achieved was more division and rancour among independence supporters. That must never happen again!
Another outcome of the Council results is this, should London deem an independence referendum ‘illegal’ whether or not it is, the Unionist controlled Scottish Councils will listen to their English masters and refuse to participate in the referendum. That simply means the referendum cannot proceed.
To overcome this possibility Nicola and her team need to advise London immediately that in the event of a refusal or any interference for her desired Section 30 Referendum the next UK General Election and every subsequent Scottish or UK General Elections will automatically be fought as Independence Plebiscites backed by Scotland’s Claim of Right on each occasion! (My preferred option anyway!) There is no way the UK Government can call its own Elections illegal!
Next she has to address those matters that harmed us most in 2014, namely currency and EU Membership. At present although SNP Conference passed a motion calling for an immediate move to a separate currency the SNP has stayed with the Charlotte Street Partners, Growth Commission position of retaining UK Sterling in the medium to long term. Ian Blackford confirmed this point recently at Westminster.

It is a strange position to adopt for two distinct reasons. First and foremost the SNP Conference the supposed ultimate ruling body of the Party voted for the exact opposite a rapid move towards a separate Scottish currency.

Secondly and more importantly the SNP has never hidden its desire to rejoin the European Union. That however becomes an impossibility if you are sharing a currency with a non EU country, in this case England! Therefore, their policies are not joined up you cannot do both so either they have to accept Conference decision and move to a separate currency post-haste or drop any notion of rejoining the EU.
Once these matters are dealt with, we need to move on to the practicalities of a 2023 referendum. We need a Draft Bill passed and over any ‘legal’ challenges. We need to have a unified campaign and proper planning of same. We need a date for the referendum! Regional and local campaign managers need to be found, trained and empowered. Nicola and her Party need to start embracing the YES Movement. Participation and promoting AUOB, Now Scotland, SALVO and SSRG events and initiatives. Deals need to be made between the independence parties to ensure we maximise our votes at every occasion to counter the Unionists.
The Unionist Parties have a deep loathing of each other, however on every occasion they put that aside to protect the interests of the British Union. Nicola Sturgeon and her leadership need to act in a similar manner for Scotland’s best interests!
Life, love, politics are simple it is people that make them all so difficult at times. Today is a chance to get Scotland back on track. Only Nicola Sturgeon can do this. There is noone else that can put in place the necessary steps to lead Scotland to independence. What she chooses to do will seal her fate and that of Scotland. She needs to change. Nobody else today can shape Scotland’s destiny. Should she not do what is necessary for Scotland’s well being then we may need to take a few steps back to leap forward to independence. I truly hope Nicola is wise enough and patriotic enough to put Scotland before her own desires and agenda. Should she find that impossible to do then for Scotland’s sake she needs to stand aside immediately.
I pledge here today that if Nicola and the SNP take these vital steps towards our independence this blog and writer will give 100% commitment to the SNP move and actions for a 2023 referendum. I willl give my unconditional, unquestioning support in Scotland’s cause.
I hear you loud and clear Roddy, but what troubles me is that people think the frustration being aired is just a point scoring exercise, as in people are frustrated with the SNP and are thus resentful.
It is my perception however that the exasperation runs much deeper than that, and that there are material blunders in the strategy which look set to damage Scotland for decades. If only it was a clash of personality….
When I say Nicola Sturgeon cost us Independence in 2016, I’m not just saying it for effect. Brexit was a pivotal opportunity. Northern Ireland, with a single line of text from the Good Friday Agreement secured a backstop protecting them from Brexit, which subsequently evolved into the Northern Irish Protocol, which is effectively EU Membership in all but name, and likely to be the precursor to a united Ireland. They held the initiative throughout.
Sturgeon, with the Constitutional Sovereignty of a Scottish Nation, an emphatic 62% democratic mandate, augmented by a swathe of anti-colonial principle in one treaty after another in International law, and a Brexit process which had to be Constitutional and lawful but wasn’t, … yet Nicola Sturgeon could secure for Scotland ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Nada. Not a goddamned thing. The only thing which she shot down in flames were Scotland’s Constitutional rights.

Yes, indeed, Breeks, something stinks, and I think that something is bigger than the SG, bigger than the UKG even, although that is part of it. I think we need to look around us and see what we have that someone else might want. That is where we should be starting: not from the premise that we have an inalienable right to our independence; but why do we, uniquely, not have an inalienable right to our independence? Firstly, we need to understand the infiltration of the SNP not as an infiltration merely by the far left, which it certainly appears to be and is, but the reasons behind it.
Why was Alec Salmond to be taken out of the picture? Not: these awful wummin doing that to Alec. No, the answers lie in what we are not seeing or not willing to see. If we stick to the unfailing principle that, with human beings, everything is for sale, and money and power rule that principle, we might start to get somewhere. Nicola Sturgeon is simply not clever or powerful enough to have done all this on her own, or even with the help of her ‘woke’ colleagues and civil service, not to mention the police and courts and media. Nothing of what has happened since 2014 makes sense unless you acknowledge that it started in earnest in 2015, when masses of far left former Labourites infiltrated the SNP along with genuine former members of Labour who actually want independence. From that moment on, the agenda was to infiltrate every public institution and government-aided organization. Read the Denton’s Document, folks, and then look behind it to see who is financing Stonewall and the other organs that want to overturn society, because that is the ultimate agenda – not the overturning, but the massive rewards that are to be hoovered up by the few when that happens.
Scotland is the soft underbelly of the UK: even the Tories and Labour, in England, sense the danger, even though they have been captured to a great extent, too. The resistance there is far stronger, though, as probably anticipated. Here, we have caved in because it was the party of independence that was targeted and the independence carrot could be dangled forever. I’m not talking about the gullible and the downright stupid here, but those who stand to benefit from the total upheaval of Western society, including ours. Put aside the ‘woke’ warriors and the fetishists and autogynephiles, the deluded and the deranged – they are the vanguard of something far, far worse that is coming to a country near you; they are the foot soldiers, totally expendable, and if they step too far out of line, they will be reined in by any means necessary; and it won’t be pretty. Power, wealth and what they can do for certain people is the real agenda. Every conflict, every war, every bank crash, every currency tumble – all are harnessed by these monsters – and the fascism and totalitarianism those things engender make these same monsters even more power and even greater wealth. Nicola Sturgeon is now a neocon, a neliberal and a militarist, all in the space of fewer than ten years, and she has taken Scotland with her. The far left always, but always, opens the door to the far right. That is what we are seeing now. What we should be asking is: why?

With Alex Salmond, there’s an “obvious” why he had to be taken down, because he was Mr Independence. But they weren’t finished. YES remained strong. (And Salmond survived).
You begin to wonder whether there were other games afoot. Was Sturgeon their Manchurian Candidate all along, suddenly with an opportunity to shine? Was Alex a brick wall to their wider infiltration? (I’m thinking, people who didn’t get jobs under Salmond… Did he know or suspect? Did they think he knew or suspected?). How is it possible for the party of Independence to suddenly be awash with “nobodies” so apparently ambivalent about Independence? I mean, how does that physically happen in pro Independence Party? Why are there “ambivalent” people even there? Trade them in for keen ones ffs. Who is making these nutty promotions happen?
It isn’t just Alex Salmond who’s been knobbled, it’s the whole leadership cadre and central nervous system of the party, rendered incapable of building an effective SNP, nevermind coordinating a YES campaign. Sturgeon isn’t appointing her pals. She’s locking good people out the strategic positions of influence with her motley collection of duds and toxic nobodies. How many tiers of hierarchy do you need to drop down to find your first dissenter or Indy fanatic?
Can it even be Sturgeon who’s orchestrating this, when she’s so feckless, lazy and “forgetful” about orchestrating anything else? Is there another reason why the Alphabetties get witness protection levels of anonymity, but don’t leave town or even change jobs? Are they mere conspirators, or a wee “squad” of well placed usefuls?
Why is the Leader of an Independence Movement not more paranoid about hostile infiltration of the movement than we are? Is Party security that good? Surely that’s the one big Daddy conspiracy theory of them all which the SNP would have to take seriously. How many infiltrators has Party security actually picked up on? Or are we assuming Mi5 isn’t even bothering to try?

I do not know what might make adults behave like this but there is something very wrong indeed with their ideas. The sooner we can get rid of this poison the better.
Much as though I agree with all the sentiments in your post Roddy I believe it is wishful thinking. Not only can Nicola Sturgeon not change, she doesn’t want to. She doesn’t need to either … her supporters still view her as a deity and she has the press in her back pocket.
For “her” referendum to proceed she will agree terms with the British … we all know that she will roll over to any conditions they set – question posed, answer options, franchise, timing and vote counting inspectorate.
If, on the other hand, there is no agreement the British run local authorities in Scotland will refuse to comply and plebiscite will not happen.
This outcome will be a saving grace.
Then we can hopefully push on with some of the alternative and genuine routes identified by the likes of SSRG for the restoration of Scotland’s full self-government.
I agree, duncanio. I don’t believe that there is any will to win any kind of referendum, and, like Roddy, I don’t believe that Nicola Sturgeon is even trying to win a referendum or anything else. She is most definitely running scared of being rumbled by her own supporters, which is why we have all the theatrics now – far too late – to try and convince the doubting Thomases in the membership and wider independence community that she is doing something.
Given the eagerness with which, after the local elections, Labour jumped into bed with the Tories and vice versa, and all cheered on by the Lib Dems, we should have known that they would make it impossible to hold one that is not sanctioned by a S30 Order from Westminster. I, too, cannot see any referendum route being successful, barring an edict from on high. Only once were we granted that route out and we blew it, or, at least, it was blown for us by bone-headed Unionists of the type that congregate around the DUP in NI and try to sour milk while it’s still in the cow’s udders.
If Johnson goes – and he will, because is living on borrowed time now – which monstrous reincarnation of Lucifer are we going to be saddled with next? They just get worse and worse, although Thatcher still holds the record for hellish qualities. Will either Johnson, beleaguered by his colleagues and doing his utmost to please them, grant a S30 Order, or would his successor, determined to keep a grip on Tory power? Any pre independence referendum is totally unnecessary in international law anyway, although Sturgeon is doing her level best to convince us otherwise and to help her avoid any direct confrontation with the British State, which is unavoidable, in reality. It would be the best option to hold a S30 Order referendum, because that would mean that England as the UK has to comply, but, considering that David Cameron was willing to use the Crawford and Boyle Report against us had we voted YES in 2014, I wouldn’t bank on compliance even then. It will be a filthy business and we had best be prepared for that – if we are serious about independence.
Roddy I agree with predominantly what you say here but there is one problem and that is nicola sturgeon the narcissist . All my life like many others I have supported self determination but she has spoilt that. She is behaving like a spoiled child but her reluctant to embrace others from outside and inside the Movement. So much so I have other than the key board stopped my active campaigning . Taken the bile of snp/nicola diehards who have there head in solid concrete not conceding there is another point of view. My Life My Say are a yoof outreach program set up in 2013 apparently. They’re ultra faux, über AstroTurf. They claim to operate through “globally renowned Democracy Cafés” (nah me neither but I’m hardly their target demographic). When Democracy Cafés is searched, nada comes up. They’re so woke they make my teeth hurt, 7 out of 12 Board members are from ethnic minorities. They openly advertise that their main “partnership” is with the United States Embassy, London. Set up in 2013, a staff of gawd knows how many and central London offices. The US State Department certainly doesn’t shy away from splashing tax payer’s cash around.
So, why does the intersection of Ruth Davidson, Tony Blair, The British Project and My Life My Say hold any interest?
In my opinion Sturgeon will never accede to using a Westminster General election as an independence, plebiscite. Then again, “oh we asked for S30 and they said no, better luck next time”, can’t work on the Nicophants for ever (?).
In a hypothetically scenario of a plebiscite election, a vehicle would be required to unite the Unionist vote and run a campaign. The British Project may be just such a pre-existing vehicle. It ticks all the boxes; Labour, Conservative and LibDem membership, British deep state affiliation and US State Department connections.
While I’m tempted to scoff at the notion of a patently AstroTurf outfit like My Life My Choice going up against the force of nature that was IndyRef 2014, recently, I’m not so confident. All indications are that any IndyRef II campaign will be stifled by the dead, Stalinesque hand of NuSNP.
We have an option at the next Westminster election DON’T VOTE FOR THE SNP NO MATTER WHAT THEY PROMISE. Sturgeon has went out of her way to bury the yes movement and to turn the New SNP into the labour party.
The most important worry for me is we do have a Ref next year and both the UKG & the SG rig it so we lose and this puts the idea of Scotland being Independent to rest for 40yrs or 50yrs. I remember a guest you had on your Prism show Roddy who was stating this very fact that if the next Ref was lost we couldn’t have another 50yrs, well I don’t remember any of us signing up to that idea, where do these people get their logic from.
One thing is for certain in the SNP and that career’s are more important than Indyref2 thats what we’re fighting.

I can’t see Johnson, or his successor, agreeing to an S30. I can’t see Sturgeon agreeing to a referendum. If miracles happen and both get agreed, unless there is a change from the 2014 local government franchise, we are facing a certain loss by a bigger margin than 2014.
Creating a proper UN recommended constitutional franchise, including only those born in Scotland and those living here for at least 15/20 years would take more time than is available to hold a referendum in 2023.
In any case, no preparation has been done by the SG: no answers to the questions which contributed to the 2014 loss: no preparation for the negotiations to follow: no decisions on how Scotland will operate as an independent country: no plans for infrastructure improvements to facilitate contact with our European neighbours: no plans for the setup of an administration to run a country. I could go on.
We all know Sturgeon has no interest in independence, because if she did, progress would have been made on all of the above, but nothing has been done.
If Sturgeon is our only hope, we are done.

Boris Johnson just dodged a bullet with the vote of no confidence. After that, there is no way he will allow Scotland to walk out the door on his watch – unless the referendum’s failure is guaranteed and somehow Boris gets the credit for saving the Union.

The increasing problem I have with IndyRef2, is that I believe a plebiscite general election is far more likely to get the job done, and that’s what we should be focussing on, rather than this tired old “Scotland Act” soap opera with a B-List cast.

The Tories are in a mess, and a snap General Election could happen any time. It seems highly likely that Scotland will return an emphatic judgement on the Union in a plebiscite GE, and the work we should be doing now is making it stick, making it mean what we want it to mean, and alerting the International Community to put this event on their horizon, and prime their readiness to give us recognition.

Some might suggest that we need to call her bluff to waken up those that still believe she has some secret plan and formula.
A failed solicitor is not capable of organizing the SNP’s perfectly constructed Unionist timetable (dutifully performed since our Independence Referendum in 2014)……and she ain’t an azalea! Three hundred + years is too long to remain a colony. We’ve been conditioned from pre-Primary Education to sit down and do as we’re telt. Regardless of who happens to be pulling Sturgeon’s strings, whether British, English or American, we MUST get up on our feet and TAKE BACK our country – no “ifs” no “buts”.

A referendum will never deliver independence for Scotland and the fact that we even contemplate holding one after what we saw in 2014 for me anyway beggars belief, the only thing a referendum will do is take independence of the table for a very long time.
However if that is the route we decide on then hell mend us.
Arayner: I don’t want to sicken you even more, but I think we should all be aware that this ‘trans’ lobby, backed by Stonewall and its arms, are now offering the shelter of the ‘trans’ umbrella to MAPs (Minor Attracted People) and calling for this perversion affecting children to be made, in law, a sexual orientation (like heterosexuality, homosexuality, lesbianism and bisexuality) rather than a sexual perversion. If that happens, the laws of consent will go out of the window, the laws of rape and/or sexual assault of a minor.
Not only was that demand mooted when along came the demand that bestiality be taken out of the legal canon and become a legal sexual orientation. So, again, poor dumb, beasts and pets would be subjected to rape and all manner of sexual assaults by these people. This is where Queer Theory leads. People need to open their eyes and ears and waken up fully to what is happening while they sleep.
Now, on a different front, we are assaulted by another kind of perversion: second home owners are to receive concessions, encouraging even more second-home ownership in Scotland, where the land and property laws are already all but feudal and extremely detrimental to our well-being as both a modern and a historic people.
