It is an inarguable fact that since September 2014 the pro independence Media, AUOB and the remnants of the YES Movement have kept the flame of Independence flickering. Uncomfortable truth for some is this fact, not once in the intervening years has the Sturgeon led SNP done a single thing to further the cause of independence. There has not been a single campaign or even a discussion at Party Conference on Independence. For three years now the NEC has not discussed anything appertaining to independence!
For a party that has as its, raison d’etre, Independence this is quite incredible. Certainly at every election Nicola promises and says a Draft Referendum Bill will go through Holyrood imminently. Sadly, the reality is different. There is always some excuse not to proceed with independence. Appearances on GMB, Sky News or BBC London News and Gay Pride Marches are more important than appearances at AUOB Marches! Independence can also wait, until the next election.
It should never be forgotten the contribution to the 2014 independence cause from all the pro independence sites. The Wee Blue Book, in particular, did more to convert soft Nos to Yes than anything else in the entire campaign. Wings were not alone, many other bloggers and writers contributed greatly to the cause, some still do.
In 2015 when the UK General Election was called, the Indy media and YES Groups did their bit and the famous 56 SNP MPs were elected. The Party had never had such representation at Westminster, the SNP also controlled Holyrood and had more councillors than any other party in Scotland. The polls were favourable and the mood buoyant. Just a few short months later the Brexit catastrophe happened, it seemed the planets, were aligning for Scottish independence. Sadly the SNP did nothing but huff and puff. We threatened Westminster and promised the EU Nationals in Scotland they would not be forgotten. We would not be dragged out of the EU against our will, and they would be fine, so would our exporters, and indeed, all of us would be safe because we had a mandate! We would use it, sometime, just not yet. Nicola had a bigger mission she needed to overturn England’s democratic wishes not fulfill the Scottish democratic wishes.
Still the pro Indy media stayed onside. The AUOB Marches and Rallies grew in number, in people attending and in mood to campaign for independence. Still the call never came. Then a setback, Sturgeon decided at the UK General Election of 2017 it should be fought without any reference to the independence word. She went further and forbid any mention of the I word on any campaign material or on the streets or doorsteps. Still the voters and pro independence media stayed loyal but now there was for the first time ever some disquiet. The SNP lost 21 MPs.
Between 2017 and December 2019 we had the weakest UK Government in the history of the Union. The time was perfect to make our move. Instead of using our position of strength Nicola Sturgeon decided to help force a UK General Election. The numbers were favourable for the SNP to win back some seats. However, the arithmetic in Westminster was more favourable to Scottish self-determination if used wisely. Instead of Scotland’s best interests Nicola opted for SNP’s best interests. She wanted more SNP MPs in the English Parliament. The problem with this that after the election of 2019 the SNP no longer had any leverage. Still the pro independence media, stayed onside. Throughout all this time the Anti-Scottish MSM attacked the SNP, Independence, Nicola, the Bloggers, the Cybernats!
To appease the sceptics, prior to the election, the independence carrot was brought out of the cupboard again. The theme was simple, Vote SNP to Stop Brexit and then hold an Independence referendum in 2020. Almost all pro Indy media this writer included trusted and believed her. The YES Movement and supporters believed her. The SNP membership and supporters believed her. The Anti-Scottish MSM believed her and were apoplectic with unionist rage! Then just six weeks after all of those people gave her what she asked for, she reneged on a referendum again! The anti-Scottish media were happy!
On January, 31st, 2020, she made her now infamous capitulation speech. We would after all be getting dragged out of the EU against our will. All those promises by Nicola and Blackford were hollow rhetoric, nothing more. The EU Nationals promised so much before the election were thrown aside like an old pair of unwanted slippers. There would be no referendum in 2020 either. She did though promise, if we gave her another independence mandate in May 2021 she would for sure give us a referendum shortly after the election. She further promised that by the end of 2020 the Referendum Bill would be through Holyrood ready to go on day one after the May 2021 election. Four weeks out from the 2021 election the referendum bill still hasn’t completed its passage through Holyrood. It is another broken pledge.
I have to say it was on that day in January 2020 that I realised the SNP no longer did what it says on the tin. I know I am not alone in my despair.Since that day many of you have expressed the same feelings of hurt and betrayal.
Still I didn’t express too much of my inner feelings in my blogs. That was until the day the SNP gave a £3,000,000 financial stimulus to the Anti-Scottish MSM. That, for me, was the final straw. That was the day that I resigned my membership of the SNP. I did not however resign my desire or commitment for independence. I have continued to agitate for independence every since.
I realised in 2016 that both votes SNP was not a recipe to win SNP List Seats. The problem being that there was no other independence party to give my regional list X to. I have never been comfortable with Greens commitment to independence. Events since 2016 have confirmed my reticence was correct. OBFA showed that the Greens can very easily be seduced by Unionists. They have held the balance of power at Holyrood since 2016 however until a few, weeks ago they haven’t even mentioned independence let alone done anything to move Scotland towards our goal. That is why I and others embrace completely the arrival of the pro independence Alba Party.
It is now a fact that all the main pro independence media are fully behind the concept of Alba on the List. We see this as the best way to support Independence and remove Unionists from our parliament. Not a single pro independence blog is promoting bothvotes SNP. Why do you think that is the case? Is it because the pro independence media want or don’t want Independence now?
If you were to believe the MP for Perth and Perthshire all these pro independence writers and bloggers are unionist plants. These same people who throughout this seven year SNP independence hiatus that have kept the cause of independence alive are somehow enemies of Scotland. He reaches this absurd position because we agitate for independence. Some might rightly say to that man,’what have you done to promote anything but yourself for the 20 odd years you have been at Westminster?’ How dare he suggest that these people, who give their time freely for the cause of independence are bad people. He has encouraged pro independence SNP people that the pro independence media should be shunned and despised. He thinks that because we dare to criticise an Independence party that declines to move on Independence we are agents of the crown. I say to Mr Wishart, my colleagues are not receiving an obscene annual salary and pension from the English Parliament, you are though! We do not get subsidised food and housing funded by the taxpayers. None of us has a single desire to be Speaker of the English Parliament. Every day we promote Scottish independence for free, indeed for most of us it costs to do this. You need to remember just who puts you into your privileged position every five years. You should be ashamed of your actions, sadly you are too self obsessed and not bright enough to realise anything but your own reflection!
I along with my fellow pro independence colleagues pleaded with the SNP for years to avail themselves of our reach and dedication to independence. They chose to ignore us and instead have made peace with the devil. Our SNP leader now makes common cause with the anti-Scottish MSM. Using the Daily Record, The Sun, Scotland on Sunday, The Guardian daily she launches attacks on the pro independence Alba Party and its leader Alex Salmond.
For decades these newspapers that with every edition carried SNP Bad, SNP Accused lies and smears are suddenly now protecting and promoting the SNP and Nicola Sturgeon? These organs of the British State Ms Sturgeon and Mr Wishart want you to believe are now good guys. They want you to believe these papers that for decades, have called you cybernats, snake oil salesman, bravehearts, vile separatists are on your side. At the same time they want you to believe the people that from day one have always been on the same side as you are now the enemy.
Sadly, a lot of SNP supporters have drunk that cool aid. It goes against all logic as does the bothvotes SNP. If people keep listening to the nonsense coming from the anti-Scottish MSM via, Ms Sturgeon and Mr Wishart we will end up with a Parliament much like the last one. Perhaps a small SNP majority, more likely and SNP Green ‘arrangement.’ What we will also end up with are five more years of heartbreak and no independence.
You can either continue to believe the MSM or listen to the pro independence Media. Let logic guide you, not tribalism or propaganda.Vote SNP in the Constituency and Alba in the Regional List. Then on May 7th we can begin work on Scotland’s Independence. This really is The Last Saloon, if we let this opportunity pass us by independence will be off the scene for decades to come.
Saor Alba gu brath.
Webcom Radio is Now Playing:
Bang on again Roddy —l note this morning in social media that the Usual Implanted LBGT groups are on Alba’s case re a supposed lack of respect for their agendas —complete horseshit of course but encouraged by Sturgeon at every turn ( just about the only thing she does encourage ) .You honestly have to ask yourself how these groups are anywhere near an Independence Party but l know the answer to the question before k ask it
I think this is possibly your best analysis yet even though it makes for extremely uncomfortable reading. I’m now the victim of ‘I told you so’ from my husband who saw Nicola Sturgeon as a busted flush some time ago. The only people I defend her to are people (including friends) who are unionists.
It was also difficult to write Patsy, especially knowing some will be incensed and loading up their Cognitive Dissonance.
Hi Patsy , I too feel like a fool , the amount of times I defended that Woman is a source of embarrassment to me , that so many others seen her for the lying chancer she is before I cottoned on .
I’m just surprised you took so long to see through Sturgeon
It was increasingly obvious from 2014 that she was being consumed by her own megalomania
Don’t blame the pro-UK media,it was a carefully managed strategy to create the brand Nicola
Extremely unlikely that enough people have been persuaded to vote YES given the dismal record of the SNP in Govt and simply don’t believe the excuse that it is all the fault of Cessminster
Even if Indyref2 is held imminently,YES will lose again
Start planning for Indyref3 now
Requires rethink of participation at Cessminster – currently SNP MPs are mostly embarrassing troughers – and excelling in delivery of devolved powers
Finally drop the anti- English rhetoric and be pro-Scotland
What anti English rhetoric? As to losing a referendum wrong as wrong can be. The Union is,done all that is left to them are sad little bigots that pollute independence sites, and blogs trying to sow, dissent and division. They are so blatantly obvious with their rhetoric Billy boy!
Sadly very true, the SNP Leadership have lost their way.
The branches are generally still sound.
We haven’t given up on Independence but some of us have left the SNP because it has become an obstacle, I still hope that can change but it won’t happen while the SNP are controlled by people with other objectives.
I do not agree that this is the Last Chance. I fear that that apocalyptic tone can and will be damaging to the cause.
As I have stated so many times, the “elephant in the room” is clear – and its a subject that is only skirted around because of the fear of public reaction. Any thorough student of modern history will tell you that achieving independence from the butchers’ apron is really hard. And it can be painful and nasty – for decades before and decades afterwards. I have worked extensively in Africa with small nations who achieved independence 60-plus years ago and many are still in a shocking mess. Indy has a price to pay. But ask anyone who lives in these still struggling countries are they still grateful to be free from British rule and the answer is always emphatically (and loudly) YES!
If anyone was so deluded to think that Westminster would simply roll over and say “fair cop” back in the heydey of the SNP victories then they need to study the very first nation that achieved independence on these islands. This was hard fought and hard won. And for long decades afterwards. And seriously hampered by our Celtic cousins’ failings for faction-led disagreements, arguments and revolts. And being our close cousins, Scotland has long had the exact same faction-driven failings.(I refer you the Derby “discussion” in the ’45 rebellion. Where were they? Derby. In England. And what did they eventually decide to do?)
I do not condone or excuse violence in our struggle in ANY way (notice I did not mention “activism” which I firmly believe is inevitable and long overdue), but it is enough to recall that the Israelis had just one brief hour to celebrate Indy back in 1947 before they had to pick up a rifle and man the barricades.
I will say it again : Indy is hard. Our price will not be paid in blood, hopefully. But it will still be none the less painful. It is my earnest belief that independence for the first two colonies of a Medieval English aggressive foreign policy (Scotland and Wales) is now an inevitable evolutionary process. As will also be the unity of Ireland.(And there are gentle rumblings in Yorkshire and Cornwall also!)
But how long will this process take? Longer than we all think. (18 years for Wallace and Bruce). If we let faction-led bunfights distract us. Nicola and Alex are simply bus drivers. Drivers will always come and go. Some get presented gold watches for good service – others do not. How many leading personalities will survive the real bunfights in a FREE Scottish Assembly? The people of Scotland are the growing tsunami in all this. Stay the course. The prize is everything! SAOR ALBA!
I do like reading the truth! Thanks, Roddy.
Is Billy boy’s disguise left over from Hallowe’en?
Well said, BHB. The mantra used to be “to settle up not settle in”. How that has changed, not just in the parliament of GB but in Holyrood where the status quo reigns supreme.
I will point out one small but significant thing, the parliament of GB despite being used as an English parliament, especially after EVEL, is NOT an English parliament. It houses BOTH governments legally as equal partners with equal authority. It is this reason why the English government who refer to themselves as “UK” government, in order to promote the English continuator state narrative espoused by Crawford and Boyle, always refer to the PARLIAMENT of GB and not themselves. Legally they cannot or rather could not until the IM bill was passed and Scotland refusing to assert its sovereignty, as usual, accepted it. Despite Scotland refusing to exercise its rights unlike the English government which has done so since the ratification of the Agreement, Scotland has been and still is an independent sovereign country. Only the statehood of both countries having being ceded and both having the same rights to act or not as they deem fit for their own country. The reason I point this out is that the vast majority of Scots and indeed their representatives have bought hook, line and sinker the English continuator state narrative which claims that Scotland was extinguished and subsumed into a greater England under the albeit new name of UK. (A point that was stated in the paper written by Crawford and Boyle and promoted by the English government and its establishment.) It is why the vast majority of Scots believe that “reserved” matters are reserved to the English government and fail to apply the same logic they use to claim that the English establishment can do as it pleases but Scotland who is an equal partner with equal authority cannot.
Another small but related point is that when the 1707 Agreement was being drawn up and enacted Scotland was not governed by parliament but predominantly by charters and the kirks unlike in England and thus the number of representatives sent to England were not equal but fewer than England’s. The notion of an English majority of MPs or population grants them dominion is false but it is one that the Scots in combination with the narrative do not question. It makes it easier to blame a foreign country’s government and establishment rather than looking closer to home and holding one’s own government to account.
The move to a fully Scottish parliament is long overdue. I would say 300 years overdue given the Scottish government have failed Scotland for the entire time they have been a signatory to the Agreement. One can only hope that the Scottish parliament devoid of England’s political parties is realised and that Scotland’s statehood can finally be reasserted.
The woman is a phoney, a total fraud. I don’t believe she started out as one, but I do believe that being cheered to the rafters at a packed-out Hydro got seriously addictive and so began the personality cult.
I genuinely fear for the mental health of her true believers once reality dawns. Experts say it can take up to 8 years for a victim to be truly free.
Great article.
However I disagree it is last chance saloon for indy. A majority of indy MPs at next election then negotiations begin. If Nicola the yoon does not deliver a serious indy plebiscite ( and I don’t think she will) within the first year then there will be even more mutiny in the ranks.
I do think it is nicola’s last chance saloon. And by her every expression she knows it.
Nailed it, Roddy. The facts laid bear for those with a mind to read them.
