One of the best television pieces ever is the very last scene in the very last episode of Blackadder.
That final tear jerking moment when Blackadder went from one of the generations finest comedy shows to a moment of spectacular, emotional historical drama.
We had followed Rowan Atkinson from Middle Ages till this final moment of pathos in the trenches of France in WWI.
He and Baldrick had had more escapes than Harry Houdini and they made us laugh all the time, right up until that final emotional episode.
In those final minutes Blackadder, Baldrick, Darling and poor, simple but nice George are standing motioinless in the safety of the trench awaiting the whistle that will signal their entry into this criminal, yet legal slaughter.
Suddenly as the barrage guns fall silent Blackadder turns to Baldrick and says,”Now would be a good time for one of your cunning plans Baldrick.”
Alas, for the first time ever Baldrick has no cunnning plan to get them out of their latest predicament.
The sound of a whistle piercing the early morning stillness is heard and our four tragic characters rise from the trench to attack the enemy position.
We hear them screaming their heroic war cries as they bravely do their duty and charge the waiting German heavy machine guns.
The remaining few seconds are played in slow motion as our heroes meet their undoubted fate.
We are not shown their violent end, it is left to the imagination of the viewer to paint their own picture of their demise.
We do not know if they all died together or if some made it further across no man’s land before succumbing to a German bullet.
The theme tune plays very slowly to capture this magical screen moment and it adds a certain serenity to this wonderful piece of realistic drama.
What we do know for sure is that General Melchett certainly survived, he had ordered this assault on the enemy trenches, he of course, was not going to lead the charge or indeed be within miles of any actual dangerous fighting.
Tis’ always the way, the Nigel’s order the killing, they just don’t want to be too close to it when it is happening.
Although Blackadder Goes Forth was a comedy drama it did in its own way expose the madness and futility of war.
The WWI Generals, Politicians, and Royalty of all sides that conceived and implemented this slaughter were kept well out of harms way that bit was very accurate.
This blog is not the place to go into all the reasons for the war, suffice to say it was all about power, wealth, empires and the greed of the rich and possessed.
Those that fought and died in the war were in the main the poor and dispossessed!
The men that did do the heavy lifting were promised on their return there would be homes for heroes to replace the slums most of them existed in prior to the outbreak of the war.
Most of the men that joined to fight in 1914 didn’t even have the vote, their wives and daughters certainly didn’t get the vote till 1918.

You should understand it is not a recent concept that those who have the most, dislike democracy for those that do not have much, it has always been this way in the class ridden UK state.
Those with the most think they have the right to send your sons and daughters to war but only send their own when they can be assured that although they will be in uniform they will be out of harms way.
These are the same people that think that everyone except them and theirs should be paying taxes.
They think because by hook or crook they have amassed enough wealth and will never need social security that nobody should need state aid.
Except of course if their banks or finance houses fail then it is a national emergency and state aid is actually a necessity for the ‘good of the country.’
When you have had a country mansion and a London Town House in the family for generations you do not see the need to build any affordable housing in the inner cities.
You most certainly do not see the need to give away a few acres of your land for the benefit of the many in the community.
Whether it be about sharing sovereignty or wealth the ruling elite in UK loathe the very thought of such nonsense.
They invented the phrase ‘what is mine, is mine and what is yours, is mine too!’
We know that those heroes that did make it back from the carnage of WWI did not come home to homes for heroes or a National Health Service or unemployment benefit or sick pay or holiday pay.
It took another world war and millions of more deaths before ‘benefits’ were given to the people of the UK by the only ever decent Labour socialist government we have had.
Ever since the Attlee Government left office the right have been working towards the day when they can reverse all the social benefits bestowed on the British people between 1945-1951.
They know they cannot remove suffrage from the masses however they keep in place a system of ‘democracy’ that makes our vote almost meaningless.
With a FPTP method of voting less than 5% of the total seats change colour except on rare and freak occasions.
When they do change colour it is between the three establishment Parties so no harm is ever done to their cosy lifestyles.
The only areas where there is a semblance of democracy are the devolved Parliaments in the Celtic Nations.
Stormont has been closed now for almost two years with no sign of resumption, indeed all the talk is of direct rule from London indefinitely.
Wales ceded most of their power back to Westminster in exchange, well for nothing, London Labour in Cardiff doing what Labour does everywhere obey London without question.
The last defiant bastion is Holyrood although the London Tories have their plans to neuter or close that too.
One Final charge of the guns is necessary to enable them to do that without hinderance.
This time it is not out of the trenches in France and charging the machine guns, this occasion the madness of the ‘Generals’ is a Brexit slaughter.
Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, England are all in the Brexit trench waiting the sound of the whistle.
We have been given the time and date for this suicidal mission it is October 31st.
Again we can be assured the General Melchett’s of today’s Brexit carnage will not be affected, not even a flesh wound for any of them.
I have to believe our SNP Scottish Government have a cunning plan to help avoid the definite Brexit slaughter.
I also worry that perhaps they might have taken my advice from a blog I wrote in 2017.
In this blog I described a favourite film of mine about the Mexican Revolutionary Pancho Villa he realised letting the people sometimes suffer a bit made them more likely to fight for their freedom instead of just muddling Through and letting others do the hard work.
The quote from Villa when asked why he didn’t save all the villagers from an execution by the bad Federal troops was,
“I could have saved them said Pancho, they already love me and they love Mexico too but they don’t hate Mexico’s enemies enough to fight them, after today they will hate them enough and they will fight.”
When I relate this to present day Scotland, it resonates.
We have millions who love Scotland, they love the way the SNP Government operate however because of SNP mitigation they have not been exposed to the true vileness of London Union rule.
Too many of our people do not ‘hate’ the enemies of Scotland enough yet.
Perhaps a few months of Brexit will be enough to bring on board the vast majority of the Scottish population to the idea of terminating the corrupt Union.
When supermarket shelves start to empty, when medicine is no longer there whenever you need it and relatives and loved ones die because of the shortages.
When the job you were promised was safe post Brexit goes and your mortgage is in arrears maybe then you will start to hate the union enough.
Perhaps it will take some rioting on the streets of UK to let you know that suddenly the Union is not the strong and stable place you had always believed it to be.
When looters start rampaging through the town centres will the BBC and Sun still be able to convince the majority all is well in Blighty?
When their mortgage interest goes to 10% because the £ and the economy have tanked will that be the tipping point?
None of us know for certain what the ‘cunning plan’ is I believe that the EU have discussed this in depth with the SNP and that the EU hands are tied as long as UK is still in the club.
On November 1st.then the EU can openly court Scotland and agree the Scottish Government tried to do everything legally and correctly and it was the Little Englanders that had thwarted democracy every time.
They can then also point to the lies and double talk the UK deployed in Leaving The EU, their disregard for international treaties and their inability to negotiate in good faith.
The downside to this is that every day we are out of the EU and remaining in Brexited Union, irreparable damage is being done to thousands of Scottish families and businesses.
Just as until the guns fell silent on 11/11/18. men were still dying and being crippled.
Scotland will suffer casualties until we end the Union.
The message is clear, loving Scotland and the SNP is not enough to win our independence.
Every day and in every way we need to expose the atrocities and criminality of the British Union.
We need as many Scots as possible to hate the union as much as many of us already do!
Then we can be assured not only of independence but a united people during the first difficult years of transition to independent nation state.

No bad
From you I take that as a huge compliment 😁😁
A generation ago, most people would have ‘rainy day’savings to see them through a catastrophe such as Brexit. The many youngsters with maxed out credit won’t know what’s hit them, no matter what lifestyle they lead, or class they pretend to be in. If you need to work to pay your bills, Brexit is a threat. It’s only the extremely rich wh are insulated from the fallout.
I almost agree, that the rich will benefit from Brexit and the less well off suffer, but there were no “rainy day” savings in my family! Two generations ago, my maternal grandfather caught TB and couldn’t work and my grandmother was given a loaf of bread and a piece of cheese by “the parish” to feed the family for a week. She was told she wouldn’t get any more until she sold some of the furniture she didn’t need. Good job she took no notice as she was able to take in a lodger to help with expenses. My parents were by no means poor, but every bit of spare cash was invested in the family butchery business to fight of competition from the supermarkets. When the business was sold my parents had just £50 left in the bank after paying for a very modest bungalow.
The old song lyric says “It’s the same the whole world over. It’d a dirty rotten shame. It’s the rich what gets the pleasure and the poor what gets the balme.
And meant
What a Read.
Like Lambs to the Slaughter, unless we enact the Plan.

Great piece that really resonated with me. Well done!
On my emails immediately after your post was a Change.Org petition to prevent the hugely wealthy Duke of Westminster from demolishing a whole community of affordable housing in London. The residents are attempting to prevent the demolition which will mean that thousands of people and a whole community infrastructure is lost – houses, schools, shops, church, families split up & elderly residents moved from their families & friends & the area they grew up in, had their families and lived their lives. It may not be WWI, but it still is a war of wealth and power against those who have neither.
I don’t want Scotland to be part of this. Surely we can do better!
We can all see that Boris intends to enable a no deal brexit which in turn allows him to use emergency powers to close Holyrood and implement direct rule (hence the 3,000 new starts at the Scottish Office) If we can see this then it is inconceivable that the SG does not have a contingency plan for just such a scenario…It will be interesting to see what that plan is…
Here is the slight of hand
Benefits…these are not benefits. They are payment due.
The brilliance of that post WW2 population is that they demanded a share of the pie…in perpetuity. After 2 successive generations were required to give their all (literally their mortal selves) they weren’t going back in their box and they had learnt from painful experience that the smattering of trinkets and words were worthless.
The well to do have deliberately morphed the meaning of the word Benefits from it the benefit (interest) gained from the investment of their blood and sacrifice…to now be a gift from the wealthy.
One is an payment due – the other is charity.
Time for the working class to again relies this is not for the government to give and take. It was their duty to pay the dept.
Read this I felt a cold stiffening resolve coming over me to help end this despicable union,
Im ready….blow the whistle!
Marvelous , thank you and thank Nana for pointing the way!
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks too from me to Nana who helps drive traffic to my offerings,it is much appreciated.
A bleak picture you paint, Roddie, but your best work to date. Entirely agree with you; I think the protective bubble the SNP have created for this country during their tenure will suddenly be regarded as a precious, precious gift. Those who ‘don’t bother about politics’ but are asked to put up with less food on the table will finally see a monster at their door. I don’t wish this upon anyone but pretty soon, as a result of very real Tory/Brexit hardship, this whole country will be buzzing independence.
Thanks also for your ‘Through a Scottish Prism’ podcasts, thoroughly enjoyable and informative, an hour is way too short!
Beautifully written, I felt a lump in my throat and yes more steely resolve. This is our fight and one we must win for generations to come. Thank you for your words better put than I ever could.
S wonderful piece of writing which was so poignant for me, an exBarrhead boy.
You would find my grandfather and father commemorated on the memorial in Cowan Park.
I just get homesick when I read this. Now lived in England for 50 years.
Time for independance. I Cannae wait, now 78.
‘ War is a racket’ by Smedley D Butler, he wrote an excellent description via a poem and book about war. Its online, have a read.
Great article. Rich mens’ wars have ruined many many lives, the knock on effect devastating, for families and even for generations that come after in fact.
The Tories will intriduce compulsory conscription post Brexit, they need an army and it might just stop the young from taking matters into their own hands to counter the dystopia of Brexit Britnat England. Terrifying.
