Webcom Radio is Now Playing: Andrew Douglas - Webcom's Random Recents Show - Webcom's Random Recents 2026-08-29

A Leaders Hustings.

We now seem to have the final three nominees to replace Nicola Sturgeon. Humza Yousaf, Ash Regan and Kate Forbes have all indicated their willingness to take over the role of SNP Party leader. This, of course, also entails becoming First Minister if elected by the Parliament. It also means they become the defacto leader of the entire YES Movement. That is a huge responsibility.

All of the contenders have indicated that they view themselves as unity candidates. I am delighted to hear this. It is exactly what our cause needs! There has been rancour and division for too many years now.

As this website has continually being urging unity of the movement I must admit to being excited at the prospect of the entire grassroots once again pulling together in the one direction. We last did this in 2014, and we came so close to our independence. With this in mind I would like to make a suggestion that might just help to restore some of those good old bonds of unity.

For several years now the internal divisions within the independence support have without doubt damaged our cause badly. This is not the time to point fingers. However, with Ms Sturgeon’s resignation, we have an ideal opportunity to heal the wounds.

Back in 2018 the SNP had a Deputy Leadership contest. I was fortunate enough on my Through A Scottish Prism audio version to interview all of the candidates. With that in mind I want to offer an open invitation to Humza, Ash, and Kate to join with me on a TASP Leadership Hustings Special.

If they are willing to participate, I will arrange a time that is suitable for them to record the show. We have recently introduced a new feature on Prism, questions@throughascottishprism.com This allows our thousands of viewers to submit questions they would like our panelists to answer. On this occasion the panel would be the three candidates.

Firstly, of course, we need the candidates to agree to participate in this debate of unity. Once they hopefully do this, I propose that the public submit the questions they would like to ask these leadership hopefuls. This would present our three rivals with the perfect platform to demonstrate their unity credentials as well as state their vision of Scotland to the public. It is also an opportunity for our candidates to hear what issues the voting public are most concerned about.

I know that the YES Movement are anxious to hear how each of the candidates intends to achieve our independence. Will they favour a Westminster or Holyrood Plebiscite? Is the route another mandate at the UKGE in 2024 and demanding that the Unionist PM listens to the will of the Scottish people? Which of our three are in favour of a Constitutional Convention to plot our course to freedom? Should we challenge the UK Government in the courts over the Section 35? Is the EU or EFTA in Scotland’s best interests? One for our Unionist viewers, what currency will Scotland use? All of these questions and more that our supporters want answers to can be revealed on TASP.

I trust the candidates accept this invitation which is being made in good faith. Our programme goes out on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Rumble, Anchor and reaches an audience of thousands. This is their opportunity to reach those viewers and demonstrate their unity credentials. I, and our viewers await your responses.

  • Great initiative Roddy and I truly hope the candidates accept your offer – although I’ll not hold my breath

    • Crackin’ idea. I too hope any or all of the contending candidates accept your open invitation. I would imagine Humza Yousaf has already been told not to participate here by his handlers plural (the Emergency Existing-FM / Peter ‘The Maw’ Murrell), but hey ye never know.

Yeah, a hustings here would allow the candidates to openly speak and make their cases to the large Prism audience and each other, without the biased slant put on it by the main-stream-media.

      Let’s have ye’s… ladies!

      • Hello Cactus, you popped up in my heid the day, was wondering how you were doing as had not seen you post anything for years.
        Hope your well.

      • Aweright Lenny, aye ahm doin’ braw thanks, I do pop-up in places now and again. Hope yer gaun guid too out on the Isle. Been chatting about getting another big Yes sociable again sometime in Glasgow this ‘Spring’…

By the end of next month, Scotland will have a new First Minister.

    • I should add that if the contenders for our new and next FM state that they are willing and keen to co-operate (as unity candidates) and work together with all of the other pro-independence political parties, then they too should be human enough and extend an eagerness to acknowledge and talk with Scotland’s supportive pro-independence online media – and by extension, the many Scottish people. So to Kate, Humza and Ash… give your heads some ‘space’ away from your party and the MSM and come talk hither.

“All of the contenders have indicated that they view themselves as unity candidates.”

At some point too, I think the contestants will also need to accept and be honest with themselves and the electorate, that their former leader and now bunneted FM was NOT a politician of unity with all of the other Scottish pro-independence parties, as has been clearly demonstrated.

  • Excellent idea.

Let’s hope they all take yo up on the suggestion. If they do that will be indicative in itself of a willingness to listen, cooperate, debate openly.

It would follow that unity of purpose would be part of that new attitude.

  • It will be quite telling which of the candidates take up your offer, Roddy. I hope it’s all three, of course. Will you do the special if only one or two accept?

  • Great idea, far away from the msm. Currency and MMT are the big issue for me, a vision to fund a new dawn for Scotland and a social conscience to make everyone feel and be included. No foodbanks, a proper living wage and a world-beating NHS for starters. Shake the magic money tree and invest in our future. How about some new ferries that are fit for purpose and to the design offered to us on a plate. EFTA immediately – if everyone agrees, EU – manana. Let’s keep it simple folks. As for the mechanism on how we get there, a brit state referendum is now dead in the water, so we need a plebiscite vote. Who has the guts – at the right time – to pull down Holyrood and force it? That would be the winner for me. Anyone who talks austerity and deficit and too wee, too poor etc is a non-starter.

  • Unity would be nice but very unlikely as only one of the candidates (Regan) seems to actually want to do something about getting Scotland free of this rancid corrupt Westminster. Yousaf admits he does not have a clue how to get independence and is a gradualist. Forbes is also a gradualist who sees independence as something to be followed on the yellow brick road. A never ending journey. I’m just waiting for both of them to repeat Sturgeon’s ” time is on my side” comment.

We have had nearly a decade of independence stagnation and broken promises under Sturgeon. Are SNP members going to give us another decade of the same by voting in Yousaf or Forbes. In fact under these two there probably won’t even be the broken promises because they won’t even bother making any promises on independence. The question will then be how long can the SNP keep pretending it is a party of Scottish independence.

  • Ash has already said in her statement for leadership, that from day one she will start work on a Constitutional Convention & will make it that 50%+1 of ALL Indy voters from ALL other INDY Parties would be enough for her to go for INDY.. The other 2 contenders are devolutionists like Sturgeon whole cabinet.. Yusaf will fight FOR the GRA & as he has made a shambles of every cabinet position he has held so far, How the hell can he ever run our country. Forbes is also a devolutionist, on hearing her talk in an interview Independence was around fourth in her priorities, in fact her priorities were to put right the mess YUSAF has made of the NHS & every other position he has mucked up.Forbes also proved she has NO back bone, so how can we see her fight for Scotland, when she couldn’t even turn up to vote against Sturgeon on the GRR, & she says she will work with Westminster to make amendments to that GRA bill that she couldn’t bother to turn up to vote against, a bill that was never discussed at any conference or in any Manifesto.. If the SNP Party are to survive life after the MURRELS & Scotland is ever to stand a fighting chance of being an INDEPENDENT country, then there is just ONE Candidate that is offering ALL of Scotland hope.. But there are so many in the SNP who do NOT want Scotland to succeed, and they have the media backing to keep us in chains.. Time the MPS/MSPS along with the members eligible to vote stood up for this country.. I do wish I could just post without always having to fill in my details & wait for clearance.. I have been a supporter of this blog form the very start..

    • 👏👏👏❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿nae Mair lies deceit and 🥕🥕🥕🤮.Honesty to the people who pay they’re big wages.

  • I think Ash will accept your offer Roddy, she’s trailing at the moment only because she’s not as well known as the other two and according to Wings the MSM are already trying to sideline her ( I wonder why) so any exposure for her would be a good thing, So far I like what she’s had to say but I’d like to hear more, if they all turn down your offer you could always pass the invite out to say Nicola, her husband & Angus Robertson, that would make an interesting threesome 🙂

    • If there are candidates who will not accept your invitation to participate in a Prisim debate then allow the candidate who is prepared to debate air time.

And maybe Roddy you could publish a copy of the invitation to the candidates along with any responses.

  • Like Alex Salmond and Alba being denied air time and a voice in the leaders debate on TV by Sturgeon and her British media (bought and paid for) I fear Ash Regan will be denied air time and column inches as a way of sidelining her and her plans from the debate. As the best candidate for independence and the survival of the SNP she will be denied a voice by the MSM. Maybe this is an opportunity for “Social Media” to circumvent the system and win the day. The bottom line, and rule of thumb, is that whomever the MSM is promoting is the “states” choice and not what is best for Scotland. Any air time that Ash can get would only help her cause and that appears to be sanity and Scottish Independence. Whether the other two candidates accept or not, I believe that Ash Regan (should she accept) be offered the floor and the mic as a bit of sanity would be refreshing after 9 years of lies and sordid governance.

  • Couldn’t think of a better medium for the candidate, or candidate to appear on than TASP.

This is a medium read by predominately nationalist independence readers many of whom are SNP members.

It is SNP voters who have the vote in choosing a new leader and not the wider public.

Of course whoever the SNP members elect will not necessarily become FM.

The MSPs have to vote to elect the FM and as I realise, the SNP is minority party in government, and a party riven with division.

Could the parliamentary dynamics coupled with SNP division cause an interruption to the SNP hegemony.

I don’t know the answer and maybe I am wrong. But something is saying to me that things my not be as some may casually think.
