The GRA 2004 is a Westminster piece of legislation, tacked on to Scottish legislation, as is the 2010 Equality Act. Both need to be repealed, and, in the case of the EA, new legislation introduced to reflect present-day conditions. By the way, how is Dame Helena Kennedy getting on? I agree with Yvonne in that I do not expect Sunak to interfere here. What he is far more likely to do is strengthen the protections for females, which will negate a lot of the GRA reform. The ensuing protests will show the public that it was entering female spaces and rights that was the whole point of this movement. I now have far less empathy for these men than I used to have, having seen through the guise since 2015 and the rapid manoeuvres to infiltrate Scottish political life. Yes, there are so-called ‘trans’ who do suffer from dysphoria, and, yes, they need to be protected, but not by giving away female spaces and rights. Third spaces are essential. The porn-soaked men on the lower rungs of this movement are driven by their sexual feelings (and they are naturally women-hating if they women don’t kow tow to those feelings) and, as such, along with their young female handmaidens, are fodder for the bigger project – which is to remove females from public life and influence in order to allow Queer Theory to dominate, and for it to launch and unleash the next wave of neoliberal capitalism, just as the old one dies. It is aligned to Big Tech, Big Pharma, Big Prosthetics, Big Medicine, Big Green Energy, etc.
If the Scottish parliament doesn’t accept it, they are shown up to be what they are: cowards and women-haters. If the mass of the SNP membership decry Westminster interference in this, females in Scotland will see immediately that (mainly) the men and the youth in the SNP/Greens, etc,. are happy to throw females under the bus. Either way, they are sunk.
We all know who the good MSPs are, and we all know now who voted for this anti woman stuff, so we know how to use our vote come the 2004 GE, then the 2006 SE. Frankly, I’d applaud if Sunak were to interfere, as he has a legal right to do, given this is not legislation that arose originally at Holyrood, and given the immense impact it will have across the UK on hundreds, perhaps, even thousands, of pieces of existing legislation, the incalculable cost of addressing all of these and the huge cost to the NHS. These costs will knock the fuel bill rises into a cocked hat, and it will be ordinary people who will have to foot the bill. Don’t believe them when they say it is a tiny minority. It won’t be when this passes because this legislation will allow any man, with or without any exterior or interior changes to declare himself a ‘woman’ and gain legal access to ALL female spaces and rights.
Roddy, I agree with much of what you and Phil have to say on the gross unfairness of our society, and I am ashamed of the (hard) left right now, but it always was woman-hating, I’m afraid, which is ironic since Marx actually approved of female equality – at least on paper, if not in actuality. He was as misogynist as the next man. It is just that, now, they don’t care about showing who they really are. However, they always, the hard left, enable the right to do as it pleases because it gives the totally erroneous impression of being reasonable. I think many Tories are actually worse than perceived because they not only blame people for their poverty, but, whenever they see ordinary people get ahead, even slightly, they move to drive them back into poverty to punish them for daring to think they have the right to better themselves. For many of them, the natural order is being flouted when ordinary people have the temerity to believe they might be owed a bit more of the resources.

I paraphrase, but never put down to malice what can surely be put down to stupidity, JC – or a mix of both. I read The National today (hard copy) and could not believe the rank hypocrisy and utter ‘dumbness’ of some of the comments on the GRR. One commentator stated that this has been, perhaps, a very clever ploy by Sturgeon to wrong-foot Westminster, with others along the same lines or the ‘puir wee sowels’ narrative that has been roundly kicked into touch. Another suggested that right-wing elements has ceased the opposition as if all women are right-wing. Unfortunately for the dolts, it is two halves of the left-wing movement: one, the hard left (always a sell-out, so, naturally, in tune with this insanity) and the left (women and men who have maintained their equilibrium); and the hard left part has rushed to open every door to the right, as it always, without exception, does when it raises its ugly head, as, again, it does in every generation.
Sacrificing women and girls and children, like some hideous pagan cult, in order to create a confrontation with Westminster? Ay, very clever – not. Women who were withdrawing their vote from this terminally ludicrous, odious sanctimonious party will only be hastened on to do so after reading that nonsense. She doesn’t do clever ploys. If she did, we’d be independent by now or well on the way. Nah! The price of the Greens’ backing of their budgets, etc. was GRR. It really is that simple, if you add in the daft wimmin in the SNP who also backed this stuff.

Now? Her brains been taken over by the carotene.No matter how much truths I told her, it’s all Alba, Salmonds fault,wouldn’t hear otherwise, had to leave,thinking wtf has happened here,it’s heartbreaking to see this in Scotland, it really is.

The thing that really bugs me, JC, is that there are ways round this stuff that would have guaranteed female spaces and rights, but also allowed ‘trans’ people to have an easier time of it. I cannot believe that so many are so stupid, so why did they push it through as the utter dog’s breakfast it it? I think the Greens wanted no amendments, no deviation from the original. Again, we have to ask why? I do believe that part of it is that at least some of these politicians recognise it for what it is from personal experience. Which is why it is really scary because it suggests that there are so many people with kinks these days that anything could pass.

Here the dominant national party elite and bourgeoisie, instead of liberating the people, opts instead to reach a co-operative agreement with the colonial power, taking the people up successive blind alleys; this is what leads to the rupture we now see in the independence movement. A feature of cultural or colonial assimilation is an oppressed people adopting a ‘colonial mindset’, which explains why many Scots oppose even their own liberation. Until we understand these and other psychological impacts of colonialism we will not fully appreciate what independence really means (i.e. decolonization) or why it is necessary (liberation from oppression).
