Dave Thompson was all over the place in this interview:
(1) acknowledging that the organisation that he has applied for registration as a political party with the Electoral Commission is not actually a party;
(2) saying that new parties wouldn’t be offered much in the way of list candidacies under AFI – except for AFI itself, the newest of all parties, which would cream off a large number of candidacies for ‘individuals’!
(3) stating that AFI would field a range of pro Self ID and anti Self ID Candidates… so basically in my area of Stirling, if a Green candidate were selected to be the AFI candidate I wouldn’t vote AFI because the Greens are even more Woke than the SNP, have done nothing to push the SNP towards independence, brought down the only piece of legislation, albeit flawed, ever passed with the intention of fighting sectarianism, and whose biggest push ever as been for employee car park charges. I gave my list vote to the Greens in 2016, but like many others who lent them their votes, will not do so again;
(4) ignoring the fact that a single new party, the ISP, has been formed to hold the SNP’s feet to the fire in terms of independence, promotes the rights of women and children against the invidious self ID GRA, and has a feasible policy on Europe – for Scotland to join EFTA like nordic countries, which would allow Scotland also to have a trade agreement with England. The ISP is an actual party that people can rally around for their list votes rather than waste them (120,000 wasted SNP list votes in my region – not one MSP in 2016) on the SNP;
(5) seemingly impervious to the truth that by creating a confusing Frankenstein’s monster of a non-party, they are playing into the SNP’s hands by confusing independence voters into retreating into a default 2 votes SNP situation and muddying the waters for the genuinely feasible alternative pro independence, ACTUAL PARTY – the ISP. Or is that Dave’s plan all along?
Thats exactly the sort of response I would expect from you John, You are very much into the isp and will happily put down anyone or anything that is a challenge to them, for no other reason than personal opinion. Your response is the one muddying the waters.
AFI will be lead by it’s members, not by any single person or group. ALL of Scotland’s regions will have equal representation so that no one person or region can try and push through their views. That is what you call democracy.
Dave is only Interim leader and all office bearers willl be democratically elected at our conference by the members. Can you say the same for your favourite party.?
I must admit I agree with Joan Savage , I too am unsure as to how the AFI will encourage and manage the various factions vying for support , I admire that the AFI are seeking to create an umbrella group and that having too many choices will dilute the list challenge efficacy , I am also extremely concerned at the mantra that parties will not challenge the SNP. on their governance or policies .
Maybe I am too cynical and too much a conspiracist but I don’t just want to vote for a SNP LIGHT option . I am vehemently opposed to the GRA and HCB bills and I am EXTREMELY ANGRY that the SNP are causing this division by refusing to ditch these policies and IGNORING the onslaught WM are continuing with
Just listened to this podcast.
I thought David Thompson came across very well, very pro-independence, very articulate, honest and straight-talking. I’m sure little hick-ups will occur, stumbling blocks that most fledgling alliances encounter but I heard nothing to suggest his ideas are anything other than genuine. Also, Thompson has a track record, doesn’t have to prove his credentials, and made his statement during the podcast that he’s not actually leading this alliance.
It concerns me greatly when someone as incontrovertibly pro-Scotland is attacked so vehemently by other pro-Scotland people, as in the case of Joan above – Joan, you honestly reminded me of Stewart McDonald, for Christ’s sake. If you must criticise, at least present your argument in a reasonable and fair manner. David Thompson is no more the enemy than Colette Walker is. For the record, I felt Colette was equally able and articulate to represent Scotland where it matters.
