Michelle was right the first time in saying England before sadly changing it to Westminster. Westminster includes SCOTLAND, England, Wales and Northern Ireland and even with the Celtic nations uniting fully they would have no say as the English system that is used doesn’t favour the other component countries. Folk should not be scared to say England and English when referring to the English government and its establishment. It is part of the colonial mentality that Scots and their representatives have in which they think it is somehow attacking what they consider to be their superiors while also finding that promoting Scottishness and exercising Scots sovereignty is abhorrent to them (commonly referred to as the Scottish cringe). Anyone who has looked at the effects of colonialism on former colonies and the people can see this is common practice and deep rooted. Scots need to promote their country, their interests and their people. To reclaim their nationhood and their statehood. As the saying goes, “O wad some Power the giftie gie us, to see oursels as ithers see us!”.

Great interview, Michelle and BB. This pandemic has opened some eyes to the deep-rooted inequality in our society around the issue of poverty and its many facets. Women with children to feed and clothe are about to be targeted again: many of them have been in front-line jobs, in the care sector, in health care, in supermarkets, in factories, and they will find that they have had to work excess hours as their sectors have increased workloads and production.
For single women with children, in particular, however, when it comes to assessing their child tax credit, the authorities will find against them, and penalize them by forcing them to pay back any extra they made to keep the UK ticking over during this most difficult time, and because their employers gave them no choice.
It will be forgotten that women are half of the people who not only kept the country running, but who also put their own lives at risk every day, in order to do so – and most of them will be working-class women. It is a constant source of anger and hurt to me to see how women are always targeted when things get tough.
They are the front-line troops when cuts to numbers are made, when cuts to wages are made, when cuts to pensions are made. You can say that it’s because of historic biological reasons, but I have long since believed that it is simply because we are women and, as women, we do not kick up a fuss. Simple as that. Always cut out the weakest from the herd and run them to ground. Same goes for the disabled.
The recent revelations that the people with some of the highest salaries and pensions in the UK are the ones who still grub around for extras by lobbying, is utterly sickening. They are also the ones who make laws to keep others in poverty. They are a disgusting set of human beings. No one at all should be allowed to hold office without first having worked for a living and without education about the real problems of our society – before they enter office. Far too many coat-tailers who have never known a day’s hardship in their pampered, straight-from-university-to-parliamentary-work puff.
The pseudo ‘woke’, middle-class give the impression that they care about equality, but they have not the slightest idea what real inequality is, and it isn’t about stamping your wee pampered feet because you can’t get all your own way. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I have never felt that we have lived before in an age of such pretentious, shallow drivel that passes for real life than we are living through right now. Not only is the Emperor in the altogether, but he doesn’t even have the slightest idea of what clothes are or how to find them or their purpose.
I see that Kirsty Blackman is opining again that there is no threat to women’s rights and spaces if self-ID is introduced. How on earth did someone with that shallow an understanding of the real world ever get into politics in the first place? It is as if she has been lifted out of some amniotic fluid of total naivety and placed in a jungle of reality where the predators are other humans wrapped in animal skins. How do you get to be that lacking in the very essentials for sentient life? I am not trying to be cruel, but she is just another silly, skin-deep woman, hurting other women’s lives, who cannot draw a breath unless some male-bodied person is telling her when and how, but never why.
Excellent. A very knowledgeable, focused, driven and passionate candidate. Just what Scotland needs. Scotland could never fail with such quality at the helm.
What a contrast to what I hear from the contemporary SNP! A bright, passionate super-talented working class woman with real affinity, connection and yes love for the people she represents. I contrasts this with the cynical cogs of the SNP machine, especially at parliamentary level, whose contempt for the people they are privileged to represent drips from every pore as they pursue their own pet agenda’s. Michelle Ferns MSP challenging a Holyrood full of careerists and callow student politicians is something I really look forward to.
Really good to hear Michelle Ferns on this long-format interview – I’m really enjoying all these Scottish prism interviews, they are giving me some real insight into issues and people this last wee while – Michelle is an excellent Glasgow region candidate, and I totally agree with her that it’s the causes of poverty that need to be tackled not just having the symptoms mitigated, and the best way, the only way, to do anything about it is to have independence.
I was voting for Alba anyway come May, but being in Glasgow and hearing Michelle makes it an absolute definite vote for her and I’ve got total confidence in promoted her and Alba.
I won’t join any political party, so my number hasn’t been added to the Alba ranks, but I wholeheartedly support their cause – I’ve been watching a fair number of interviews with Alex Salmond and he really is a force of nature so really hoping the NE vote him into our Parliament – we need that maturity and nous to get the MSPs pulling their socks up.
Alex is certainly not holding back with criticising our broadcasters this time round – good for him! I’ve also noted that most interviewers aren’t even questioning his ‘other routes to independence’ that is, it doesn’t need to be a referendum (though still the entire MSM keeps saying we want a referendum,,, um, no, I don’t want a referendum, I want independence and a plebiscite vote to show that my fellow citizens want it too). But THAT’S how you do politics, it’s already seeping into the public consciousness that there are many routes to independence, and it will soon be normal to discuss these things. The MSM and main parties might think it’s something to fight over later, as they spend their energies trying to traduce the reputations of Alex and other Alba candidates for this campaign, but once people catch on to the idea, later will be too late. I hope to see the ‘gold standard referendum’ mantra wither and die.
Alex Salmond is doing an amazing amount of work – I know he says he’s enjoying being back into politics, but holding his own with the positive campaign while dealing with constant personal smears, and the surprising level of candour he’s employing, as well as backing up all his candidates, with the number of interviews he’s doing (along with getting party policy set up), and the short timescale: it’s a hell of a lot of work. I’m glad he’s on our side – imagine if his aim was maintaining the Union! We’d have no chance – even though I disagree that any political party can be the ’embodiment of the yes movement in the high summer of 2014′ because no one political party can be everything to everyone (but I agree Alba has captured the enthusiasm that has been there waiting to be unleashed these last several years) – and I’m hoping he gets our politics, and governance, back on track with mature debates on actual issues – including women’s rights. Primarily, I think he’s our best hope of ever getting independence in the next century.
Such a good interview & such a great candidate! Michelle certainly is the kind of person Scotland needs. Knows what’s wrong, knows what causes problems & is willing to, no – wants to! work hard to sort things. ALBA & Indy really does have some inspiring people who are more than capable to take this country forward! If only they could be heard by ALL of Scotland! However, ALBA is working so very hard to do what it can to get the message out! I’m amazed by its energy & determination! And it fills me with so much hope. I do believe we’re going to do this Indy thang!
