Great stuff, BB. What I have never understood is that people – usually very young and extremely naive people, who seem to leave school/university and step straight into a well-paid career in the SNP, are paid top dosh to give the government the benefit of their untold and hard-earned years of wisdom, and yet no one appears to have told the SNP hierarchy that Westminster deals a dirty hand – always. From 2014, we went wrong, then, in 2016, they should have known that they could not turn Brexit. So many opportunities lost. No planning for independence, nothing.
Shipping: we should have built at least two brand-new up-to-the-minute passenger ferries to ferry people to and from Europe from a Scottish deep water port, and, also, built a heavy transport ferry to take heavy goods vehicles to and from Europe. This would at least have afforded us some autonomy in trading goods and in moving people after Covid and Brexit, but, in any case, we were outmanoeuvred by Westminster as per. I know there can be difficulties with procurement, and contracts, etc., but it should have been possible when we saw how the wind was blowing in 2014, let alone 2016. Smeddum and barefaced gallous action are the prerequisites for regaining our independence.
I’m not sure who actually said it, but he was absolutely spot on when he pointed out that the middle-class people who have moved to YES in the polls can just as easily move back to NO if their own skins are saved. This is precisely what happened in Quebec. The Anglophones moved towards independence, but moved back again when the central government of Canada promised greater autonomy and more jobs and other concessions. We should never, ever underestimate the power of small ‘c’ conservatism and me-ism in the bigger picture. That is why I pull eschew all referendums except domestic ones after independence. I do think we will have to go down the Treaty route/UN Charter route/international law route in the end, but I could be wrong.
Very interesting, I do believe that the SNP are sitting on their hands and should start implementing policies or actions that are strangely reserved matters. Start with funding the safe drug taking work and there must be plenty of other issues we can support.
