In the realm of sports, particularly football, national pride often transcends club allegiances.It certainly does with myself.When Scottish fans gather to support the national team at Hampden or elsewhere, they do so with a singular focus, to witness victory for their country. Regardless of which club their favorite players represent during the season. We are all Scotland fans when they are playing. The collective aspiration is to see the best eleven players unite under the national banner and triumph on the pitch. This sentiment of unity and shared purpose is a powerful force, one that can elevate a nation’s standing on the global stage and inspire a sense of collective identity. It is this same spirit of unity and national pride that should guide us in the realm of politics.

Just as football fans rally behind their national team, Scots should rally behind the best individuals and policies for their nation, irrespective of party affiliations. In the same way that a football victory pleases the nation and enhances its prestige worldwide, political success can bring about positive change and elevate the standing of a country on the global stage. However, achieving this requires a shift in our mindsets, a departure from tribal politics towards a more inclusive and nationalistic approach. I believe that shift is towards Independents for Independence.

Scotland, a nation rich in history and culture, serves as a poignant example of the need to prioritise national interests over partisan divides. As discussions surrounding Scottish independence continue to dominate the political landscape, it becomes increasingly evident that the path to sovereignty must be paved with unity and collective purpose. Just as football fans set aside their club rivalries to support the national team, Scots must set aside their partisan loyalties to champion the cause of independence for Scotland.

Supporting the very best in politics means selecting representatives and policies that have the nation’s best interests at heart. It means evaluating candidates based on their competence, integrity and dedication to serving the people rather than blindly adhering to party lines. Just as a Steve Clarke selects the best players for each position to ensure victory on the field, voters must choose representatives who possess the skills and vision necessary to lead the nation towards prosperity and self-determination.

The concept of nation before the party is not about erasing political differences or stifling dissent, rather, it is about recognising that our shared identity as citizens of the Scottish nation should take precedence over our individual political affiliations. Just as football fans from diverse backgrounds come together to support their national team, Scots from across the political spectrum must unite to advance the interests of the country.

In recent years, the divisive nature of politics has become increasingly apparent, both in Scotland and around the world. Partisan gridlock and ideological polarisation have hindered progress on critical issues, leaving nations fragmented and unable to address pressing challenges. However, by embracing a mindset of the nation before the party, we can overcome these divisions and forge a path towards a brighter future.

Just as a captain guides their team on the field, political ‘leaders’ must inspire and unite the populace towards a common vision. They must rise above partisan interests and govern with integrity, empathy and a steadfast commitment to serving the greater good. Only then can the aspirations of the nation be realised, and its full potential unleashed.

Let us set aside our differences, unite behind the best people and policies for our nation. Let us strive towards a future defined by unity, prosperity and self-determination.
