In recent times, Spanish Prime ‌Minister Pedro Sánchez has emerged as a formidable leader and defender of international law. The Spanish prime minister has firmly maintained his position against the conflict waged by Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu, revisiting the slogan to establish himself as the great antagonist of the U.S. president. “Spain’s position is the same as in Ukraine or Gaza. No to the breakdown of international law that protects us all. No to resolving conflicts with bombs. No to war,” he has said, while recalling the conflict in Iraq. “The world has been here before. Twenty-three years ago, another U.S. administration led us into an unjust war. The Iraq War led to a dramatic increase in terrorism and a serious migration and economic crisis. That was the gift of the ‘Azores Three’ (George W. Bush, Tony Blair and former Spanish prime minister José María Aznar) : a more insecure world and a worse life,” he stressed.

Spain, as we know, refused to allow the US to use Spanish bases for any attacks on Iran or Palestine. Then, of course, the buffoon in the White House began making threats and attempted to bully Spain into allowing the man-child to get his way. Sanchez was neither afraid nor cowed by Trump’s attempts at coercion.

“We are not going to be complicit in something that is bad for the world and is also contrary to our values ​​and interests, just out of fear of reprisals from someone,” Sanchez said in a televised address. Those, like me, who are anti-war have found a new hero in Madrid. I truly believe if more of our neoliberal leaders found a backbone, then we could possibly end this bloodbath in West Asia.

Sadly, in the UK, anytime the US goes off on one of their illegal wars or regime changes, they always meekly join in the death and destruction. The English have this need to be seen as a world power, and although the reality is the UK armed forces probably could not, for example, retake the Malvinas as they did in 1982. Indeed, the British forces are now so depleted and weak, the Argentines could retake the Malvinas Islands today and the Brits would be unable to respond in any meaningful way.

Instead, to sate their need to be seen as relevant in the world, they hang on to the US bully’s coattails in every action in hope of gaining some reflected glory. The same goes for Israel and their constant atrocities;the Anglos will support illegal occupations, genocides, and the breaking of international law. They would never do anything to break what they view as the ‘special relationship’ with America. The reality is, of course, that it is a one-way relationship. The US only has one special relationship and that is with the genocidal pariah that is Israel.

Sanchez is on record as condemning the Israeli actions in West Asia. Again this week he said, ”Israel seeks to inflict the same level ⁠of damage and destruction on Lebanon ⁠as on the Gaza Strip, as its army continues attacks across the neighbouring country amid plans to occupy its south.”

Spain has been consistent in upholding international law since Sanchez has been in power. In October, Spain’s parliament approved the enshrinement in law of a total arms embargo on Israel, permanently banning the sale of weapons, dual-use technology, and military equipment in response to the genocide.

It is not just in the illegal wars and breaching of international law that Spain stands out. Sanchez is also challenging the neoliberal economic policies of the ‘West’ that have been in place since the Thatcher and Reagan years.

Pedro Sánchez actively champions Spain’s social democratic policies, framing them as a “right side of history” model that drives economic growth while strengthening the welfare state. He highlights job creation, reduced inequality, and a robust green transition as key achievements of his government, positioning Spain as an inclusive, progressive example for Europe.

Spain is experiencing top-tier growth in the EU (projected at ~2.9% in 2025) driven by social democratic policies, including progressive labour reforms, strong public-sector-driven consumption, high immigration, and strategic utilisation of EU funds. The government’s approach focuses on strengthening the welfare state while fostering investment, resulting in record-low unemployment and robust demand.

Meanwhile, in the neoliberal world, the exact opposite is the reality. The shift toward a “finance-dominated” model, as described in studies on capital accumulation, has not led to higher productive investment but rather to higher profit shares for financial institutions, creating a disconnect between profit and real investment; in other words, the poverty gap is increasing daily. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer!

Post-pandemic data (2020–2021) showed significant economic contractions in nations like the US, UK, France, and Germany, alongside surging inflation and, in some cases, stagflation, signaling a deep structural crisis rather than temporary disruption.

Neoliberal economics is increasingly viewed as failing to deliver promised prosperity, resulting in severe wealth concentration, stagnant wages, and eroded public services over the past 40 years. This ideology—prioritising deregulation, privatisation, and fiscal austerity—has triggered financial crises, exacerbated environmental degradation, and accelerated political polarisation.

The catastrophes in West Asia, Ukraine, and Iran are hastening a huge change in the world. Multipolarity is in the process of replacing the unipolarity of the US regime. BRICS and the Global South are moving away from the Anglo-American neoliberal system of exploitation and imperialism.

New heroes like Pedro Sanchez are appearing, showing the world that there is indeed an alternative to vulture capitalism. Social Democratic policies allied to gold-backed currencies are replacing the $ as the world’s reserve currency. For too long, the US has abused the privilege the world bestowed upon it post- 1945. Their constant weaponisation of the currency to advance the US’s narrow-minded foreign policy is now backfiring upon them.

Like all fading empires, those that sit at the top of the US neoliberal pile are ignoring the destruction and decay that their selfish approach to the world has caused.Nothing exemplifies this more than homelessness in the USA. As of early 2024, HUD reported that more than 770,000 people were experiencing homelessness in the US, with more than a third (over 250,000) living outdoors, in cars, or in tent encampments.

Many of those that are living in tented villages are there specifically due to medical bills. The data indicates that medical debt is a major contributing factor to housing instability and homelessness. Any nation or economic system that denies proper healthcare to its citizens is nothing short of barbaric.

What Pedro Sanchez and Spain are showing us is there is an alternative to neoliberalist economics and the forever wars of USA and Israel. As more nations look at Spain and see the benefits of social democratic policies the more they will turn away from the divisive aggressive lawbreaking ways of the US and its vassal states.

Sadly, the UK will not learn that lesson. The Anglos cannot be seen to take a lead or advice from their European neighbours, that would not play well with the deluded, Anglo view of itself. Both the UK and the US have an overinflated, and undeserved view of their own importance and standing in the world. They along with Israel are the three of the most despised and loathed nations on the planet.

The ruling elite in those nations take the opposite view and believe their own hubris, that everybody in the rest of the world envies them and looks up to them, much in the same way as the school bullies we all encountered in our childhood believed. They thought they were the most popular kid in the playground. Meanwhile, every other kid apart from those in the bully’s gang were waiting on the day when someone arrived to take down that bully.

That day has arrived in the world. Spain and BRICS are the good guys coming to the rescue of the world. The bullies that are the USA, the UK and Israel are about to meet their well deserved comeuppance.

In the case of the UK it will be the seceding of Scotland and Wales from the Union and the reunification of Ireland that will see them hit the reality of the new world order. I truly believe this shock to the Anglosphere will also bring in better times for the English working and middle class citizenry.

The USA and Israel have most likely sealed their own demise with this recent war of aggression in West Asia. The bullies are now getting the proverbial punch in the nose from Iran and the taste of the blood running down their metaphorical throat is a wake up call to the aggressors.

As we all know bullies tend to run away when anyone hits back. Watch now, how the US runs away from West Asia and witness the fate of the biggest bully in the region, Israel.When it is abandoned to its own devices, it will crumble quicker than Nguyen Van Thieu the President of South Vietnam did in 1975 when USA ran away defeated from that conflict.

Israel, Ukraine, UK and EU will learn that famous lesson that Henry Kissnger bequeathed to the world. “To be an enemy of the United States is dangerous, but to be a friend is fatal” 

I suspect that after this latest US defeat it will resort to it’s post world-war one position of isolationism. That can only be good for the world!

To all anti-war, peace loving, social democrats everywhere I say, we need more like Pedro Sánchez and fewer Trumps, Starmer, Netanyahu,  von der Leyen, Macron, Merz and all the other neoliberal warmongering, vulture capitalists wherever they may be. Let us end the failed experiment of neoliberal capitalism and herald in a new wave of social democratic economics. Spain has lit the way, it is time for the other nations to follow on for the sake of humanity.
