The very first thing that anyone who purports to be interested in gaining independence for Scotland needs to understand that you will have to deal with all kinds of people you might not like very much. It’s called diplomatic relations and pragmatic politics. If you are wise, you don’t alienate anyone because the political and international winds could change direction tomorrow.
Ruling out Israel, which probably has the best intelligence services in the world, would be the height of idiocy because, whether you want to believe now or not, we are going to need their help in the not-too-distant future. Take that any way you like. The recent attacks on innocent people in European cities and towns is not happenstance, and, basically, has little to nothing to do with the Palestinian situation. It is going to happen here, too, and in increasing numbers. Anyone who thinks otherwise has not been paying attention.
The Israelis have been under constant bombardment from Gaza, Lebanon and Yemen for years now, and I think they have lost it after 7 October. It was the straw that broke the camel’s back, however you judge it. The Americans reacted similarly after the Twin Towers. They didn’t get it either: they thought that, by getting Bin Laden, by invading Iraq, they would end the incursions. All that did was make things worse, not least because the Iraqis had nothing to do with 9/11, but also because the latest revival of extreme Islam has nothing much to do with anything that happens in the Middle East, but is a catalyst for itself.
Most of the West just doesn’t get it because we have not fought those kinds of wars for hundreds of years, and ours were fought on behalf, ostensibly, of Christianity. That they were savage, ultimately pointless and killed many thousands of innocent people was neither here nor there at the time. Even earlier, Judaism fought similar wars, too. Extreme Islam is from the same stable. The attacks on the West will increase in intensity and number and will be brutal, but we will fight back eventually, in order to survive, if nothing else. In the end, Extreme Islam will be propelled towards an accommodation, just as both Judaism and Christianity were, and out of that will come great strides forward in consensus, democracy and enlightenment, a kind of Islamic cultural renewal, not exactly like ours, but modelled on their own cultural, political and social needs.
Saudi Arabia, that most conservative of Muslim societies is already ahead of most other Islamic states in recognizing the benefits of co-operation. The Palestinians will have their state, but not yet, and, if they want it cleaned up and rebuilt, they are going to have to do a lot of the hard work themselves, as the Germans had to do after WW II. If they allow Hamas to dictate their lives again, they will be relocated. They need to go to the international community, including Israel, and ask for essential, life-saving infrastructure first, tented cities and offer assured peace. The Left Bank (Judea/Samaria) will go to Israel and any Palestinians who wish to will be relocated to Gaza. That is just how it will be unless the whole thing starts up again, and they are crushed finally and scattered to the four winds. They have had to learn a very hard lesson already. Extreme Islam will not be tolerated indefinitely in the West, whatever anyone thinks. The West will fight back and fight hard, regardless of how it appears at the moment.

Oh, yes, the Israelis did know that something big was going down, but Hamas moved before Iran and Hezbollah were ready, maybe even the Qataris, too, were involved. There wasn’t even an IDF armed unit in the vicinity, just a patrol base for IDF female soldiers who had been trying to warn Tel Aviv of movements which they thought were suspicious. You just go on believing in the ‘most peaceful religion in the world’ myth, Wee Chid, and go on believing that’s it’s all about a homeland for the Palestinians. I have absolutely no doubt at all that most Palestinians, left to themselves, and most Muslims, are decent people. However, there have been between eight and ten offers, with which the Israelis agreed, for a solution to the impasse. The Palestinians have turned down every one. Yes, that would have meant compromise. If we leave the Union, we are going to have to compromise, too, as will Ukraine and Putin. One of those compromises for Gazans will be to rid themselves of Hamas if they want to rebuild Gaza.
Pre 1948, a two state solution was offered, and, again, the Israelis, perhaps grudgingly, agreed. That offer was refused and the Arab armies invaded Israel. That was when many Palestinians fled. No one is denying that there were atrocities against the Arabs, but there were also atrocities against the Jews, not least in Hebron in what is now called the West Bank (Judea and Samaria, historically Jewish) years before 1948. All this history is eminently accessible. I do not wish to see the Palestinians relocated from Gaza because this was never Israeli or Israelite territory, but they are not doing themselves any favours.
The inhabitants were known as the Philistines and they were of Greek/Aegean/Mediterranean origin, as excavations have shown. Anyone of Arab blood in Gaza came during the waves of Arabic/Ottoman settlement much, much later. The Romans called the area (the whole of Israel) Palestina after they had wiped out or dispersed the Israelites and burned the Temple in Jerusalem and many of the Israelite towns and villages.
