The British Union is on borrowed time. This latest incident with Dominic Cummings is just another step on the road of implosion. Since the beginning of time empires and dynasties have all ended for the same reasons that will end the English empire. Arrogance, greed, corruption, narcissism and always an us and them.
The Emperors and Senators of Rome believed that they were destined to rule the known world forever. Rome for all its beauty, culture and invention rotted from the top, not the bottom. The rich and powerful became so self-obsessed and self centred they ignored the pleas of the common people. Nepotism and corruption rotted the very core of the empire. When the end came it seemed sudden to those at the top of the food chain. Those on the bottom had been expecting and praying for the demise for a very long time.
Similarly the French Revolution while a shock to King Louis XVI and his belle Marie Antoinette was predictable.Their peasantry had been agitating for a long time, and the ruling elite just ignored their pleas for bread. Liberté, égalité, fraternity was the cry as Madame Guillotine severed the royal heads. Those heads might never have rolled if those in power had listened to the cries for bread. Arrogance and ignorance the mothers of revolution.
The Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 had been threatening from the previous century. The poor and dispossessed of Russia had been entreating the Tsar for a fairer society. Too many in the vast empire were living a subsistence existence. Tsars and Tsarinas were in their minds living gods, absolute rulers. They could not be questioned or disobeyed. They lived in gilded cages separated from the hardships of their people. The nepotism, corruption and inequality finally ended the Romanov dynasty. Lenin a revolutionary discounted by the Tsar and his advisors is alleged to have given Yakov Yurovsky the order to execute the entire Royal family and entourage. In the small town of Yekaterinburg on the night of 16–17 July 1918 the bullets and bayonets executed the entire royal line.We may have still had Romanovs if they had listened earlier to the pleas for bread and democracy. Instead, they ignored the people, discounted them as irrelevant and now an entire dynasty lie in unmarked graves.
That same Communist regime would build an empire and lose it for the very same reasons that they themselves had rebelled. A ruling elite that was only interested in themselves and their clique of advisors and friends. The proletariat was seen merely as economic units to fuel the regime and the selected inner circle of sycophants and their chosen ones.To some the falling of the Berlin Wall was sudden, it wasn’t, that situation had been building for decades.
Not one of these revolutions to overthrow tyranny did so by means of the ballot box. The fact was that in all cases it was a lack of democracy or regard for the masses that eventually brought all of these Empires crashing down. The politics followed the overthrow. Only in the Bolshevik Revolution was there a readymade political force ready to take over the running of the country.
The common thread in all of these events was that the ordinary citizens tired of being ignored and mistreated took matters into their own hands. In all occasions the ruling elite always acted in a disdainful way. The more the people agitated for reform the more intolerant and violent was the reply from the state. The more the people asked for bread, democracy and fairness the more tyrannical was the response from those in power.
When you look at all those upheavals the circumstances were virtually the same. The rich and powerful could not control their greed. The more wealth they amassed the more they craved. They surrounded themselves with flunkeys and sycophants that told them what they wanted to hear. They shielded themselves from reality. The outside world was ignored. They were all so arrogant and full of entitlement they just could not envisage the peasants daring to question them, let alone overthrow them. In all instances the Emperors of Rome, Monarchs of France, Tsars of Russia all were told and thought their people adored and revered them. When their was any civil disturbance the flunkeys and yes men would tell them it was a few agitators a minor localised disturbance by a few dissidents. By the time the palace doors were being booted down and set alight, it was too late.
In modern times as Dictators and corrupt governments are overthrown, it is the people that always do the deed, rarely the ballot box. Tyrannical and corrupt governments do not accept the ballot box if it does not give them the result they want. Democracy is only ever recognised when it coincides with the tyrants wishes. Mandates of the people likewise are only recognised when the ruling elite endorse those mandates. Anyone that opposes their world view has to be marginalised, demonised and ultimately ignored.
All of the factors I have mentioned above exist today in the British Union. We have a corrupt regime in London that truly believes it is above the law or the will of the people. The ruling elite and establishment are surrounded by flunkeys and yes men. The media and civil service work and operate only for that establishment, indeed they are part of the establishment. We have the semblance of a democracy only. The entire structures of UK Government are seeped in privilege and nepotism. We have an unelected monarch and nobility that believe they are special as did the Romanovs and Louis Capet. We have a government in London that is elected by an undemocratic FPTP system that discounts and ignores the majority of votes in most constituencies,. We have an unelected chamber of almost 900 Peers that are unanswerable to the people. These are mostly toadies and party donors of the ruling elite that are given entry without the need of public approval. We have a Civil Service in London that is rammed by people from just two universities that have the same worldview and sense of entitlement as those that are their paymasters. In turn they are constantly assailed by lobbyists from the same schools and universities as they attended. They represent the money interests and those looking for influence in the corridors of power. These are the modern day equivalents of the courtiers of Louis XVI and Tsar Nicholas!
It is a cosy relationship for all of those in the inner circle. It does not though serve the needs of the people in any part of the British Union. It is especially ineffective in the Celtic fringes that view this Anglo-British autocracy with disdain and growing mistrust. Just as in previous times the ruling elite in London are being told that those voting SNP, Plaid Cymru, Sinn Féin are just a few dissidents nothing to worry about. The flunkeys and yes men tell them some tough love and these malcontents will be crushed. Their so-called experts and advisors from the Celtic countries tell the London masters the majority are in favour of the status quo. No change and no concessions are needed. The best way to react is to ignore the votes of the people of Scotland. Disregard the three recent occasions Scots have voted for a plebiscite on Independence. Instead of recognising this democratic will of the people, the London imperialists are ignoring the voters. The Anglo-British imperialists have their placemen and women in the civil service and Quangos of Scotland. They dutifully do everything to keep the Scottish people in line and adoring their London masters. They keep telling the rulers that all is well just a few dissidents. They try and have some show trials commit illegal acts to stitch up beloved Scottish patriots. All the while the Scottish people grow more restless. They implore their Scottish political leaders to release them from this corrupt illegal London stranglehold. Like so many other times the politicians want to politic. The people want action not politics. Throughout time and throughout the entire globe when the people decide enough is enough no politician urging caution or patience will quell the mob. London and its lackeys should be aware if you keep ignoring and chipping away at our democracy and democratic choices there will be a backlash. Scottish politicians should also note if you do not act in the interests of the people they will act in their own interests. The Declaration of Arbroath 6 April 1320 was written by Scots saying if we were ever dissatisfied with our monarch or rule we would have the right to take matters into our own hands. People on both sides of the border should take heed of that.
History has taught us that power always lies with the people, not governments. Governments that ignore this do so at their own peril.
UK or Scottish Governments are not immune from this. Both should be wary, ‘Wha daur meddle wi’ me.

Your points are very well made. I would add that we must be careful not to jump from frying pan to fire. France got Napoleon, Russia got Stalin et al, and China got Mao, none of whom gave a toss for the ordinary people, not to mention USA who has ended up with a president who can act without controls.
We need to make sure that power must always have checks, no matter how much we trust the current incumbents.
It is all the more reason the SNP should be leading not waiting on events.
Unsuccessful people wait for things to happen, successful people make things happen.
Absolutely, I also urge them to get moving. The checks I mentioned will have to be made post revolution, if you like.
Brilliant and well written article ! 👏
Thank you Vince I appreciate that.
It does feel like a sunami is on its way. As the tide on Scottish Nationalism appears to have gone out many Scots are asking what now ? But silently the wave is gathering its strength and that energy is building itself to an unstoppable wave ready to wash away all structures blocking its path. Alba Gu Brath.
One of your best yet Sir.
Unfortunately we’re not yet at the end of the line and I worry that we’re headed for our own version of the Darien disaster with Sunak about to turn the monetary screws on the Scottish economy. After all they need every penny then can get to pay for their forthcoming no-deal Brexit. Indeed it’s a buy-one-get-one-free deal by Sunak, he saves his money on extended financial support for Scotland’s pandemic precautions and in the process brings the rebellious jocks to heel for his No. 10 masters.
Then with any number of squirrel stories to distract us, a worsening pandemic crisis will usher in a Government of National Unity with the new Leader of the Labour Party and disaffected Johnston Tories and all sorts of dodgy dealings that would offer them untold opportunities to lock us up including my biggest fear a UK Constitution which they have currently waiting in the wings in Westminster.
I fear the barricades are a while away yet.
