Today we will be covering the First Minister’s statement to the Parliament about the Independence Referendum in 2023. We have been told no its no buts we will have a referendum. Agree with Eva about a plebiscite. SNP have made themseves so unpopular I can;t see them winning a majority again – even on an indy platform.
Tommy, if Starmer is such an establish,ent figure then why wouldn’t th British Establishment risk an election in order to scupper an indyref?

Old Man Gower! I don’t believe it! Sturgeon actually ‘committed’ to an indyref2 date.
But following a successful Yes vote, what happened to the announcement for our expected future independence day, like was set out last time? Even if other events happen and take over before then (like a ahem plebiscitary GE) surely the marking of our intended independence day should have also been made today inn-keeping with tradition?
The date is only provisional as it is reliant on English court proceedings and a ruling which can be drawn out.

What you say, the fact that Sturgeon’s plan is to only hold a provisional poll says it all.
Why should Scotland’s future be at the discretion of English court proceedings?!
England doesn’t even have its own parliament.

I’m with Yvonne and Phil. Huge disappointment, as expected. Yes, she was forced into it by ALBA and others, but it was anaemic. Any woman who has been following the GRA reform c**p will be able to tell you about Nicola Sturgeon’s promises. They always turn out to be window dressing exercises as we know to our cost when she promised a proper committee hearing.
Mostly those who were heard were mouthpieces dnd men in frocks, and it ended up with even more extreme demands from the latter, being able to change gender every day or even more often, for example. So, beware, chaps. All that glisters is not gold. Unless she and her ‘wokie’ cohort really, truly want independence, we won’t get it. I’m afraid that I really, truly don’t believe they really, truly want it.
They are the same people who are pushing the GRA reform, and the script is identical in format, only the subject matter is different. I hope that I’m wrong because if I’m not, and all this really was just an exercise in cynical exploitation yet again, I fear for what will happen next because, this time, she has miscalculated and that rage will not be contained.
I will vote for independence no matter what, but I, personally, will never forgive another betrayal by the SNP: if she doesn’t unite all the parties and factions and groups for independence under one banner, the game is over because thousands of women will not vote for the SNP under any circumstances now, and without the women’s vote, the game is over. If the GRA reform passes, that is a certainty. I despair of many of the men in the wider independence movement who just don’t get it, who think we should wheesht for indy. They have no idea of the simmering rage in women, in Scotland, and, for us, this transcends borders.
I fear that your enthusiasm might be misplaced as was women’s when many thought she was prepared to listen via the committee’s reports. She hasn’t. Basically, she made a fool of those women who, in good faith, made representations to the committee by inviting men to speak instead, in a number of cases. If she allows Westminster and the Supreme Court to decide our future, that is identical to what she has done to women, the script having been tweaked only a little.
Both women and independence supporters are dealing with precisely the same people who, on the one hand, want the GRA reform and self-ID, but who do not want independence. Their very reason for capturing the SNP was to push through gender reform to its ultimate destination: the removal of all laws that limit sexual behaviour of any kind. Independence is a complete distraction from that. We are being fed crumbs of placatory cake. SALVO, SSRG, ALBA, ISP, Scottish Socialists, et al should continue to build their case apart from the SNP, so that if/when we are betrayed again, we have an alternative to go to the people with.
The SNP and the Unionists and Westminster can preen all they like: when Sinn Fein overtook the Irish Party because they behaved exactly as the SNP/SGP coalition is behaving in Scotland now, everything fell, and the North would have fallen, too, had Collins been allowed to take it – which he could have done.
That’s what happens when you don’t listen to reason, when you don’t recognize the point of no return. Both women and the independence movement in Scotland are fast approaching that tipping point. If the GRA reform comes first, that will be the catalyst; if a move towards independence comes first, that will be the catalyst; but one or the other will bring down the SNP/SGP coalition if, on the one hand, it forces through GRA reform or, on the other, does not force through independence.
