Our Union with England is often compared to an abusive marriage.
I would suggest this is a perfect description of the dysfunctional arrangement we have with our nearest neighbour.
The courtship wasn’t the most romantic even back in 1707 and should have been a warning about their likely future behaviour.
The problem was our profligate guardians at the time, the nobility of Scotland had themselves in a bit of a financial jam.
Some of them had this get rich quick idea over in Central America, The Darien Scheme which had quickly gone breasts up.
This demise was in no short measure assisted by our soon to be suitor England, setting naval blockades on Panama to ensure failure of the colony.
They brought in The Alien Act and placed an English army on the Scottish border.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien_Act_1705
They were doing all in their power to ensure the circumstances were right for a marriage of convenience between Scotland and England.
The ordinary folk of Scotland were opposed in all circumstances to this forced marriage.
Unfortunately, the decision was not theirs to make and sadly they were sold out by those that were meant to protect them.

The wealthy and those born into privilege made the decision for their own benefit, not for the majority of ordinary Scots.
The dowry offered for Scotland’s hand was a PFI Scheme, 18th century style.
The money or bribes if you prefer, offered to the Scottish nobility were in fact long-term loans that the ordinary folk of Scotland would repay to the English/British Treasury not the nobility.
You could class it as an 18th century bank bailout.
The Scottish nobility escaped their financial plight by allowing the fair maiden Scotland to be regally fucked by the next-door neighbour for at least 311 years!
Even back then the poorest in society bailed out the nobility and spivs.
The rest as they say is history, that is up until 2007.
Then the subdued and cowed Scotland suddenly found its voice and wanted its opinion respected.
The ‘partner’ in our union had up until that point always been the dominant one in the relationship.
They decided our friends, who we liked, who we fought with, who we invaded.
They took all the decisions on our behalf, especially how our money should be raised and spent.
Instead of all of Scotland’s wealth and income remaining in Scotland it all went south to England and they would decide how much should be spent in Scotland and on what it would be spent.
The truth is even today, nobody outside of The Treasury in England knows Scotland’s true income or wealth.
For centuries and especially since 1921 when the British Empire was defeated by our cousins on the island of Ireland our actual earnings are the best kept secret in the Union.
Come 2014 and Scotland had said enough is enough.
We were, so to speak in the Divorce Court for Nations.
The bags were packed, the removers were booked, then came the vow, the promise that everything would change for the better.
All we had to do was give our union spouse one more chance to show how the greatest Union ever could be made even better.
We should lead, not leave this blissful marriage our partner had changed for the better.
The possibility of us divorcing England and taking our wealth with us had allegedly made our partner see the error of their self-indulgent, arrogant ways.
That equality of the nations lasted till the polls closed at 10.30pm on Thursday 18/09/14.
They even wrote down some of their promises on a newspaper front page a few days earlier.

All we needed to do to have this new nirvana, this Britannic Magnificent was give our ‘equal partner’ one more chance.
Just Vote NO and Scotland would be a paradise, a Democratic Shangri-La.
Unfortunately just like in James Hilton’s novel this proved a myth.
We foolishly cancelled the removal van, unpacked our bags, stopped the legal proceedings of divorce.
We went to bed on the night of 18/09/14 dreaming of the new and better life that Scotland had been promised by our errant bullying partner.
When we awoke the very next day, it was to a nightmare, not a paradise.
David Cameron stood on the steps of Downing Street and laid the first blow.
EVEL, which would give England an even bigger stranglehold over Scotland and our decisions.
All our entreaties to the new partnership, The Scotland Bill, rejected.
The promise of continuing membership of the European Union would soon disappear as our mad neighbour drunk on nostalgia voted for Brexit.
Overnight they decided our 27 closest friends were no longer any good and we should stop all contact with them.
When we said we wanted to keep our friends we liked them, we valued them, we were told to shut up.
We were not to associate with them anymore England had decided, no more EU.
We suggested this broke our agreement of being an equal partner, we were told to be quiet.
We are constantly told that we made a decision in 2014 to stay in the union and apparently we can never speak or complain again.
We can never change our mind no matter what happens, whatever promises are broken.

These are just some of the broken promises.
Now as we sit on the edge of the Brexit abyss our ‘equal partner’ tells us to shut up all we can do is reflect on the broken promises and make a decision on our future.
Every day we are told we have no right to decide anything.
We have to keep quiet and just do as we are told, to accept anything and everything our English partner decides.
They tell themselves and their own supporters that we are very happy, Scotland has no desire to leave the Union.
We are told even if we think about leaving they will prohibit us doing any such thing.
They threaten us with all sorts of dire consequences if we attempt to disagree with their decisions or behaviours.
They suggest if we leave all trade will cease overnight.
We are told they will even refuse to accept the 20% of their electricity needs they currently receive from Scotland.
We are supposed to believe that one in five of all English people, businesses and homes will gladly sit in the dark just to teach the Scots a lesson.
Everyone in England will stop eating Scottish seafood or drinking whisky or gin.
We are England’s biggest export market however overnight they will cease trading with Scotland and put hundreds of thousands of English people out of work.
They will keep our oil, they will tell the rest of the world to cease trading with Scotland.
All the assets of these past 311 years are apparently England’s we only have the liabilities.
We are to believe that for the last 311 years they have paid us a subsidy of the equivalent of £15 billion each and every one of those years.
We cannot possibly leave them, we are too stupid, too wee, and too poor to be independent.
We are too inadequate to make our own way in the world.
We have no skills, no expertise, nobody likes us, except them.
We should be grateful and thank them for allowing us to remain under London governance and rules.
We don’t speak correctly, we don’t eat correctly, our weather is terrible.
Our schools are failing, our NHS is shit, our transport is Victorian, our Justice system inadequate.
Just be good little Scots like the tame House Jocks and know your place.
They keep telling themselves that we don’t want to leave them, they lie to themselves that they have halted the desire for independence.
They are under the illusion that they have somehow broken our will to leave.
The same delusion has them believing that all the nations of the old empire love and revere them and just cannot wait to be exploited again by Mother England.
They truly believe their country is the envy of the world and that somehow they will trade themselves to an English utopia.
Selling what to the world is a mystery to us all.
That England will revert back to some bygone age where everything was perfect.
A place where the lower classes know their place and doff their caps to their betters.
That a docile populace will accept anything their superiors tell them.
That the colonies in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will look only to Mother England and be obedient and compliant while handing over all decision making to the superior English Parliament.
Usually, in an abusive relationship there are times of remorse and generosity from the bullying partner .
There are flowers and chocolates, extra housekeeping money, gifts galore and promises, lots of promises of future changed behaviour.
With our abusive relationship this has not been the case from the moment Cameron introduced EVEL it has been nothing but threats, bullying, demeaning, cheating, lying and a trail of broken promises.
The final steps are being put in place to ensure we can never leave.
The little democracy and control, we have over our destiny is about to be withdrawn.
The Anglo-Brits and their collaborators in Scotland are ready to make our Parliament the equivalent of an English County Council.
They are determined to ensure that we never again threaten their overlordship or ability to steal our wealth and resources.
We as a nation can either cower and let them bully us into submission or stand up to them.
I am certain Scotland’s people have now come to the conclusion that this British Leopard will never change its spots.
This time when we pack our bags and call the removers let us make sure nothing makes us change our mind.
The Anglo-Brits keep telling us what a burden we are on the English tax payer.
Let us do them a massive favour and set them free.
Independence for England!

Powerful stuff Roddie.
Surely any fairminded observer must now conclude that the British Ruling Elite are not likely to mend their ways any time soon.
If any further evidence were required, I too would recommend anyone to watch Alex Gibneys documentary ‘No Stone Unturned’ (2017)

p.s. inveterate proofreader notices ‘remorse abs generosity’
I picked that one up myself on a second read 😁😁😁😁however thank you anyway.
I think you are overrating the economic impact of Darien a bit. I know this is always presented by unionists as “Scotland was bankrupt and England bailed it out”, but the Anschluss of 1707 was a full 8 years after the failure of Darien, and it was individual would be capitalist investors who lost their money, rather than Scotland itself. The largely unelected parliamentarians were bribed by agents of the English state, and this was on an individual basis, each negotiating their own price. Only 1% of Scots actually had the vote, and only a proportion of seats were up for election anyway. Nobody else got a sniff of the money. The behaviour of the agents of the English state in facilitating the “union”, incidentally, would, by modern standards, be considered a crime in international law, so a large part of the criminal responsibility for the forced “union” lies with the English state. As for the opinions of ordinary Scots at the time, Daniel Defoe, a supporter of the union, estimated that 99% of Scots were opposed to the takeover. There were riots against the “union” all over Scotland, and the English Army was massed on the border in case their bribed puppets lost control. The following year, the English Navy was deployed to prevent to the arrival of arms from France which would have supported a popular insurrection in Scotland against the “union”. Many Scots, rightly or wrongly, put their faith in a Jacobite restoration, the Jacobites, for their part, having adopted the slogan “Scotland free and no union”. And then in 1745-6, a Jacobite restoration failed, and Scotland was militarily occupied by the English/British state anyway. Recent research by the Stennis Historical Society has found that the occupation army amounted to one soldier for every 100 Scottish citizens of the time. This is actually two and a half times the proportion of occupation troops to locals that the Nazis required to occupy France in 1940. So, in truth, Scotland WAS conquered, just as Wales, and Ireland, and all the rest of the empire had been. As you would expect of a successful empire, the methods were flexible, but the fact of the conquest was the same. Scotland was never a partner in the empire, but always only the hired help.
Thanks for this Ed however if you read what I have actually written I thought I made it clear it was the nobility that had the financial problems not the nation. Indeed the Burghs were experiencing great growth around 2.5% pa which in those days was at the top end.
The deridery term “house jock” describes perfectly the Scot-brit-nat. Conditioned by a lifetime of lies and propaganda. Trusting and subservient and locked into their world view.
Sure, you are correct. But would one expect anything else from the nobility anyway? I wouldn’t have voted for them! But then, I wouldn’t have had a vote … and aristocracy isn’t about elections 😀 Excellent website, by the way.
Thank you nice of you to say.
Another superb read Roddy , Mike drop , walk off
Thank you
God when I read articles this I just can’t get my head round why supply for independence isn’t around the 70% mark. I mean I know why given the media and all that but c,mon Scotland get a grip of yourselves!!! SNP has to do something drastic shortly
So many Scots say they can’t understand why Scottish independence is not supported by a huge majority .
There is one main reason.
It’s a reason that Scotland turns a blind eye to.
There are 800,000 English people in Scotland nearly all of them don’t want Scottish independence.
They never will
They make up about a third of the NO vote
Add to that the tories and labour who will never change and you have nearly half of the voters in Scotland
If we can persuade the relatively small number of tories and labour who are not tied to UK for life a majority for independence can be reached but it will be a small majority
In 2014 Scottish independence would have won the day easily if it were not for the huge number of English people voting against it
That might be Scotland’s fate forever
Imagine it
Tied to the UK and Westminster forever because they ensure that there are always enough English people living in Scotland to supplement the Tory mob
It’s what stopped New Caledonia gaining independence from France recently, a huge number of french citizens live there and will never ever vote against their own country
That’s what happens in Scotland
Scots are faird to say it for fear of being called racist or bigoted but it’s nothing more than the truth
It is actually just short of 500,000
@Terence callachan
you have been peddling this utter tripe on forums and blog comments for far too long.
WHY ?
You cannot pretend that you have not been told that your oft repeated 800,000 figure is a fantasy number.
Many people believe that Terence Callachan is either a troll or a BritNat Troll
Many others beliwve he is a fool.
We see you.
Hi, to aLurker…the last census in Scotland to show 500,000 slightly over in fact English people living in Scotland was eight or nine years ago every census has shown the number of English people living in Scotland increase. The next one will too and the next one will show a bigger percentage increase than normal because over the last decade property price differences between England and Scotland have widened greatly allowing people over fifty in England to retire early sell up and buy a much much bigger nicer property in Scotland.
Many have moved to Scotland since internet allowed them to work remotely too.
800,000 is correct.
And nearly all of them vote against Scottish independence.
You can stick to the 500,000 which is a figure taken from 2011 census but it’s out of date.
