At the moment the prospect of Scottish independence seems a distant hope. Many Scots who favour independence have walked away from the political scene due to despair. Many have joined fringe groups who offer multiple alleged cunning ways to by pass the political machine and bring independence. Indeed with each passing day they seem to have a new plan that assures the followers deliverance is both easy and imminent. The added bonus being those horrible politicians who have sold out the movement are not even required apparently.
My heart aches for these people, the ones who have lost all hope and others that are willing to believe there is some kind of magic bullet to freedom. It has amazed me that after Nicola’s secret independence plan so many have fallen for a new cunning plan.
Here is the reality folks, there is no quick magical route. There is no way to do this without political parties and politicians. There are only two ways to Scottish Independence. Through a democratic ballot box event or through the barrel of the gun. Everything else is hogwash. All these other wily ideas are for the dinner table. They are not for the real world. Even after armed rebellion you need the politicians to negotiate the settlement!
I am assuming that the vast majority of people reading this article are like me, in favour of a democratic transition and not a violent one. The writer-philosopher George Santayana is credited with the phrase: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” It is perhaps something that Nicola Sturgeon and her cabal of devolutionist gender bender fanatics should have heeded.
From British Electoral history we have a great example to compare to the present day SNP. It also offers us a tried and tested tactic to move the case for independence back on to the tracks. You do not by pass the politicians you replace the ones that are not doing what we want with ones that will do what we need!
The Party founded in 1934 with the specific aim of achieving Scottish independence made a fatal error in November 2014 by appointing Sturgeon as leader of the once great party. At the height of its powers and popularity Sturgeon for reasons that can only be speculated upon changed the raison detre of the party from independence to Gender issues.
Putting men into women’s safe spaces became the overarching aim of the party, not independence. She with her incompetent viciousness grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory. Opportunity after opportunity to release our land from the accursed union was wasted as she preened and posed and pandered to 0.01% of the population and the middle-class chattering mob. She totally abandoned her core support and more importantly the core aims of the party.
Today nine years after her ‘coronation’ the once great party lies in tatters. Independence has been set back but not destroyed as many of the unionists believe. The destruction of the SNP will actually become the blue touch paper to our independence.
Let me reiterate, there is no magic wand, no cunning plan, no messiah. There is a majority for independence in Scotland, and it needs to mobilise. It needs to unite. It needs to find its desire and work ethic. Nobody can sit back and hope others find the solution. We need an electoral event. Fortunately, 2024 offers us a unique opportunity to retake the initiative.
The annals of British Political History have a perfect example/model for us to follow. Following the armistice that ended the First World War on 11 November 1918, the British government called a general election for 14 December, in which Sinn Féin won 73 out of 105 seats. The election saw the overwhelming defeat of the moderate nationalist Irish Parliamentary Party, which had dominated Irish politics since the 1880s, and a landslide victory for Sinn Féin, which had never previously enjoyed significant electoral success.
Sinn Fein were very clear in their objectives for the election.
GENERAL ELECTION—MANIFESTO TO THE IRISH PEOPLE
THE coming General Election is fraught with vital possibilities for the future of our nation. Ireland is faced with the question whether this generation wills it that she is to march out into the full sunlight of freedom or is to remain in the shadow of a base imperialism that has brought and ever will bring in its train naught but evil for our race.
Sinn Féin gives Ireland the opportunity of vindicating her honour and pursuing with renewed confidence the path of national salvation by rallying to the flag of the Irish Republic.
Sinn Féin aims at securing the establishment of that Republic.
- By withdrawing the Irish Representation from the British Parliament.
- By making use of any and every means available to render impotent the power of England to hold Ireland in subjection by military force or otherwise.
- By the establishment of a constituent assembly comprising persons chosen by Irish constituencies as the supreme national authority to speak and act in the name of the Irish people, and to develop Ireland’s social, political and industrial life, for the welfare of the whole people of Ireland.
- By appealing to the Peace Conference for the establishment of Ireland as an Independent Nation.
Believing that the time has arrived when Ireland’s voice for the principle of untrammelled National self-determination should be heard above every interest of party or class, Sinn Féin will oppose at the Polls every individual candidate who does not accept this principle. The right of a nation to sovereign independence rests upon immutable natural law and cannot be made the subject of a compromise. Any attempt to barter away the sacred and inviolate rights of nationhood begins in dishonour and is bound to end in disaster. Those who have endeavoured to harness the people of Ireland to England’s war-chariot, ignoring the fact that only a freely-elected Government in a free Ireland has power to decide for Ireland the question of peace and war, have forfeited the right to speak for the Irish people. The present Irish members of the English Parliament constitute an obstacle to be removed from the path that leads to the Peace Conference.
Sinn Féin goes to the polls handicapped by all the arts and contrivances that a powerful and unscrupulous enemy can use against us. Conscious of the power of Sinn Féin to secure the freedom of Ireland the British Government would destroy it. Sinn Féin, however, goes to the polls confident that the people of this ancient nation will be true to the old cause and will vote for the men who stand by the principles of Tone, Emmet, Mitchel, Pearse and Connolly, the men who disdain to whine to the enemy for favours, the men who hold that Ireland must be as free as England or Holland, Switzerland or France, and whose demand is that the only status befitting this ancient realm is the status of a free nation.
ISSUED BY THE STANDING COMMITTEE OF SINN FÉIN’
Of the 73 Sinn Féin MPs elected in Ireland at the United Kingdom general election in December 1918, 29 took their seats on 21 January 1919 – at the Mansion House, Dublin. Their assembly in the capital, at 3.30pm, was to fulfil the electoral promise of Sinn Féin, and the ideological promise of Irish nationalism: the establishment of an independent parliament. Brian Farrell captured the euphoria of the Round Room: ‘they were there to make history and they knew it.’ Standing before an audience of one thousand – among them some seventy foreign news reporters – the Sinn Féin MPs now presented themselves as ‘Teachtaí Dála’ – ‘Deputies of the Dáil’.
In conclusion, at 5.20pm, Sinn Féin presented the first democratically elected government of the Irish Republic.
Of course, in the case of Ireland, civil war ensued among the different factions that had been involved in the armed struggle. However, the important matter was the Irish Independence Movement had won a democratic election using the Brits own system. The imperial British could not question the result for if they did they were questioning the very validity of the British State.
The Irish Parliamentary Party that had settled down at Westminster and not settled up for Ireland were vanquished never to be seen as a relevance again in Ireland. What had begun as a, coalition of old radicals had become conservative through their immersion in the British state and had to cede control of the destiny of Ireland to a younger, militant, more radical coalition.
I suggest that we need to take a leaf out of the book from our Irish cousins and replace the SNP at Westminster. It means that when we talk of Scotland United we do not include the devolutionists of the SNP and those bought off by the English imperial Parliament. You are either with us, or you are with the Brits.
There is a school of thought that suggests we should be ‘nice’ to the SNP because we want their voters to support independence candidates at the forthcoming election. It is implied those that support independence might get offended if we tell the truth about the SNP and offer a radical alternative. I dispute that narrative.
The last several opinion polls show that though support for the SNP is falling dramatically support for independence remains high and in the ballpark of Liberation. The people of Scotland just need a democratic event and some leadership.
We need someone to step forward and take control of the movement and each and everyone of us patriotic Scots needs to be totally focused on this event and have no other distractions. We have to treat the upcoming UKGE much as we did the September 18th, 2014, Referendum. Laser focus and a clear and simple message to the Scottish voters. Victory followed by a Declaration of Scottish Independence.
Should anyone have any better ideas do let us know but make sure you have a detailed plan, legal advice and precedent. The above has all three necessary ingredients for our independence. Let us reignite the people of Scotland. Let us all work as one and bring Scotland into the world of nations.
Webcom Radio is Now Playing:
A timely piece. The parralels with Ireland become closer and closer. The SNP as the Parnell party seems a fully established equivalence. The supine ineptitude of the SNP government on Scotland’s ‘fiscal settlement’ illustrates of how little value such a ‘government’ of devolutionists is. It certainly had faults but the emerging leadership of Ireland in 1918 had two vital qualities – toughness and determination.
We urgently need the same. Who is going to step up to provide it for Scotland ?
Interesting that you point to Sinn Fein as an example of an independenec party that can rise in the ashes of a failed parliamentary party. I think it’s also important that they ran on an abstentionist ticket. I agree that politicians are necessary but I don’t think they need to go to London to receive a fat salary and swear loyaly to the Windsor family. I really hope Alba reconsiders its rejection of abstentionism
Totally agree, but can we be sure all candidates of Alba and ISP will honour this plan.
Let’s hope so and that enough are elected who have the bottle to leave Westminster and set up at Holyrood to declare independence.
I don’t trust any of the Scottish political parties that claim’s to want independence now. They only betray, and even the new ones will,if they get a taste of power.Thats the nature of politics everywhere.
So your plan is what exactly? Bend over and keep taking it or a magic bullet believer?
We will have to fight them.
Well done Roddy with your condescending denigration and insulting attitude of superiority towards others who don’t conform to your beliefs
I note that you have not named these fringe groups that you have such disdain and ridicule for but in a previous interaction you named SALVO , SSRG and Liberation.Scot as these fringe groups , are these the ones with the cunning plans and the magic bullets that you find it so easy to denigrate
I personally have never heard any of these groups saying that we don’t need politicians , what I have heard them say is that politicians are not representing the wishes of the electorate and they must be forced to accept that we sovereign Scots employ them and they should be more answerable for their actions ,decades of lies and corruption by politicians should make that agreeable to anyone
“It has amazed me that after Nicola’s secret independence plan so many have fallen for a new cunning plan.” That statement is laughingly ironic given that you were more than vociferously supportive of sturgeons plans whether secret or not
“You do not by pass the politicians you replace the ones that are not doing what we want with ones that will do what we need!”
I am fully supportive of that but what do you do in the case of Alex Salmond who is insistent that the 2014 franchise will be used again in any future constitutional issue when it was proven as a contributory factor in the 2014 ref defeat, very many independence supporters believe that to do the same thing again will lead to the same result and that a minimum 10-15 years residential requirement and a Scottish Tax code should be the least minimum qualification
“It means that when we talk of Scotland United we do not include the devolutionists of the SNP and those bought off by the English imperial Parliament. You are either with us, or you are with the Brits.”
Before the 2021 election it was extremely clear and evident that sturgeon and her moronic deviants were totally committed to bringing in their reviled policies YET Alex Salmond asked independence supporters to vote snp with their second vote which very many did , obviously extending their ability to continue with their lunatic pervertions , Alex and ALBA have been increasingly going on about Scotland United , Eva still does it in every PRISM yet you are only now advising people that the snp should not be included , that should have been stated earlier before the FAKE fm (NOT MY FM) and his cabal of troughers had numerous opportunities to ignore and ridicule the genuine approach of AS
You preach and propose the ultimate sense of Scotland United which I agree with yet you deliberately alienate , denigrate ignore and omit organisations who have the best interests of Scotland and Scots at their heart and who can work constructively and beneficially with politicians and voters to ENSURE the wishes of Scots and independence is at the forefront of our democratic choices , I don’t know why you would do that as it is undermining your own proposals , I have no interest in petty squabbles of individuals but when it harms independence people should look at themselves
YOU wrote these words “Let us reignite the people of Scotland. Let us all work as one and bring Scotland into the world of nations.” Reflect
I have no need to reflect. I stand by every word indeed just two weeks ago on a live FB event again one of these followers of a fringe group told the public there was no need for politicians or political parties! I personally have heard the same nonsense numerous times. Tell you what go abd ask to see some legal advice tothe numerous claims and awaitword salad abd no legal advice. As I state only two ways to Independence, Everything else is unsubstaniated mince. If you want to keep believing upto you how much progress has been made on ANY of the claims? Yup ZERO!
You can become a UK citizen after 5 years of residence, not 15. That would be ridiculous, and immoral. But not as ridiculous as getting the entire electorate, including yourself, to prove that you have been in Scotland for 180 days a year or whatever, since 2008, to some huge burocracy that would have to process all that gubbins for millions of people. I would imagine that most people would not bother to vote – it would be a whole lot easier. It’s also stupid – you may have been born in Kilmarnock, but if you spent a year in Spain since 2008 you wouldn’t get a vote.
That is the kind of thing you may start to unquestioningly believe in when you frequent reactionary fringe groups.
I note you have not addressed any of my other comments , it is no wonder the independence movement is in such disarray when you have officials of ALBA openly alienating and denigrating people who HAVE done their utmost to revive and restore the hopes and wishes of a despondent independence support
As I pointed out in a previous comment Sara Salyers speaking at the ALBA conference was greeted with exultation when she raised the Sovereignty of the Scottish people , now it appears through your derision that she is persona non grata within the ALBA party , is that because she highlighted that it is the Scottish People who are sovereign not politicians or political parties and that that Sovereignty is only LOANED to politicians and can be withdrawn at the behest of the electorate , did that annoy the ALBA hierarchy and their calls for a convention that only consisted of the great and the good of Scotland , the very ones who have and continue to sell us out
Have you seen a shred of evidence to back up a single claim? How about some legal advice? If it is genuine why do we have Salvo,Salvo Core,Liberation ,Scottish National Congress,Stirling Directive? Have I missed any new ones? Is it sack the government,go to UN go to ICJ? How much progress has been made on any one of these wheezes? FFS Smell the coffee! Have you learnt nothing from Sturgeon and the Mandates?
I think there is a lot of merit in what you say here.
Just about to block everything to do with Barrhead Boy as he is clearly a waste of my time as he is obviously in favour of continued Parliamentary Sovereignty which is completely alien to Scotland. We now have the proof that the SNP and thereby the Scottish Government do NOT believe that the people of Scotland are sovereign and we need to let the people know how both the SNP and Alba continue to support the ultimate authority of Westminster.
Contrary to what this “author” seems to “know” the “fringe groups” have undertaken a huge amount of positive work and the results of which will soon be seen by all. BTW. that “fringe group” Salvo now has more members than Alba, so I would expect the author to refer to Alba in future as just another “fringe group”!
Please don’t leave until I sell you a bridge.I even have a Nigerian Prince that will finance it for you
