Alliance to Liberate Scotland Candidates Demand Immediate Action on Violence Against Women Crisis
Allan Petrie (Dundee City East) and Eva Comrie (Clackmannanshire & Dunblane) — candidates for the Alliance to Liberate Scotland Party, have issued an emergency call to action following the deeply disturbing report that Dundee has the highest rate of violence against women in Scotland, with an estimated 183 attacks on women a year per 10,000 people (the highest in the country).
“This isn’t just another statistic,” said Allan Petrie. “It’s a human catastrophe unfolding on our streets and behind closed doors. Women should not fear for their safety in their own city, but right now, too many do. This is a blight on Dundee, on Scotland and on every government and official who has failed to act decisively.”
Government Failure at Every Level
Despite repeated warnings and rising rates of domestic abuse, sexual crimes and stalking across Scotland, current policies have not delivered real protection for women. For example:
- Dundee has seen higher domestic abuse incidence rates than any other local authority, with the vast majority of recorded victims being women.
- Sexual crimes in Scotland continue to rise, with the number of recorded offences increasing year-on-year.
- Thousands of women suffer violence at home and on the streets, yet prevention strategies remain inadequate and slow.
Too often, official responses focus on bureaucratic measurement rather than meaningful prevention, and on pronouncements rather than boots on the ground. The result: women feel unheard, unprotected, and unsafe.
“This isn’t just about policing, it’s about culture, it’s about valuing women’s lives,” added Eva Comrie. “Attacks on women’s rights and safety, whether through cuts to services, hollow consultation processes, or policies that ignore sex-based violence have not helped, they’ve made things worse. Women are crying out for protection and they are being ignored.”
Why Women are Still at Risk
The current climate of policy impotence has consequences:
- Victims feel unsupported when services are underfunded and fragmented and not restricted to female only usage
- Perpetrators remain unchecked when prevention and rehabilitation programmes are defunded.
- Survivors are forced to relive trauma through repetitive and poorly coordinated reporting systems.
Until we centre women’s safety at every level of government, from city councils to Holyrood we will fail the people we are sworn to protect.
A Plan That Actually Protects Women
The Alliance to Liberate Scotland demands:
- A National Violence Against Women Emergency Strategyfunded and mandated across policing, health, social services and education.
- Community Protection Teams specialist units in high-risk areas like Dundee, prioritising prevention, support for survivors and swift accountability for offenders.
- Invest in Support Services secure funding for biological women’s aid, refuge spaces, counselling, and crisis support with real, ring-fenced budgets.
- Comprehensive Education Reformembed Sex-Based violence prevention and respect-based relationship education in all schools.
- Real Accountability and Transparencypolice and justice systems must report results, not just complaints and demonstrate measurable reductions in violence and re-offending.

Sorry when I see such a large figure given like per 10000 people I ask my self why not give a percentage figure out of per 100 people ?, now my math is not very good but if someone has an actual % figure i’d like to see it, 10000 is 100 x bigger than 100 so if you divide the 183 by 100 you get closer to a % number which is rather less impressive, of course women who are being attacked need protection but is it really as bad as you are trying to make out ?
1.83 attacks per 100 women, 18.3 per 1,000, does that make it more acceptable to you? 1 per 1,000,000 is to many for most of us so yes it is as bad as the report we were responding too suggested.
